About the course

UTRECHT: GATEWAY TO THE MULTI-FACETED FIELD OF ART HISTORY

Our specialised and intensive Research Master's programme immerses you in traditional and innovative approaches to the history of art. Working in close connection with museums and heritage institutions in the Netherlands and abroad, you will acquire the theoretical insights and practical experience necessary for a career in academia or the museum world.

The programme is not limited to a single period or geographical area but singles out important developments in the field. It is structured such that you can pursue your personal interests. You are encouraged to critically reflect on the past as well as imagine new possibilities in the study of art history, material culture, and museums.

Entry Requirements

You are able to interpret and apply complex theories in the field of art history, as demonstrated by a relevant research paper or Bachelor’s thesis.

You are able to design, perform, analyse, and report on scholarly research in art history, as demonstrated by a relevant research paper or Bachelor’s thesis.

You have a strong motivation to do independent research, which is discussed convincingly in your motivation letter.

You are able to express yourself in proficient English

Scholarships

SELECTION CRITERIA
Eligible candidates are selected for a scholarship on the basis of the following criteria:

- Academic excellence and promise in the proposed field of study;
- The academic quality and results of preceding qualifications, as evidenced by proof of belonging to the top 10% of the class, grades, test scores, a writing sample, letters of recommendation;
- The quality and relevance of the motivation letter for the Master’s programme (academic content, intercultural and communication skills, personal motivation);
- The quality of the application for the Master’s programme itself (completeness, accuracy, consistency).

Value of Scholarship(s)

Tuition fee or Tuition fee plus living expenses (€11,000)

Eligibility

- Belong to the top 10% of your graduating class
- Hold a non-EU/EEA passport and not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans
- Have completed your secondary school and/or Bachelor degree outside the Netherlands
- Have applied for one of the participating international master’s programme with a start date of September.

Eligibility

Students who hold an EU/EEA passport (including Dutch), and
- have applied for a Master’s Programme at Utrecht University (only UU students can receive a Bright Minds Fellowship)
- will be starting their Master’s Programme at Utrecht University in September 2018
- will be working to complete their first Master’s degree
- have shown academic achievement in their previous studies
- bring an element of diversity to the UU community

Application Procedure

Complete the online application form before February 1.

The applications are reviewed by the Bright Minds selection committee. The committee considers:
academic achievement, as shown by grades and (if available) GRE or GMAT scores. Personal background, as demonstrated by a variety of factors, including but not limited to educational experience, socio-economic background, cultural heritage, race and ethnicity interpersonal skills, as demonstrated by extracurricular activities, community service and work experience
