Student Profiles

Sarah Waters

"I was lucky enough to study at Buckingham for three years, undertaking both my undergraduate degree in English Literature with French and my masters in English Literature by research. The English department is fantastic and without the staff and their support both academic and pastoral I think my university experience would have been very different. The opportunity to discuss ideas with leading experts in their field both at undergraduate and postgraduate level is invaluable; as well as fuelling your enthusiasm for texts, authors, and a whole range of subject areas, it gives you greater confidence to find your own voice within what can sometimes seem an insurmountable mountain of criticism. Furthermore, the English department and the University of Buckingham as a whole, thanks to its small size, is very much like a family with staff and fellow students from across the departments always there if you need support or a friendly smiling face. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Buckingham and cannot imagine a better place to study."

Victoria Gilchrist

"When I started at The University of Buckingham in January 2013, I was immediately surprised by the amount of support that I felt from the English Department from the very beginning. They made sure I knew all the important information, and that I was happy and prepared for my first lecture the following week. The support from the staff did not stop there though. They continuously strived to ensure that I was not only succeeding at my degree, but also enjoying it at the same time. The lecture groups were nicely sized - enough for you to be able to have a good interaction with the students and the lecturer, and the tutorial groups were even smaller so you would have time to properly discuss your opinions, and have the chance to ask important questions. Throughout my time at Buckingham I can certainly say that I have found some friends for life, broadened my horizons and made some incredible memories, as well as gaining a degree in English Literature."

Alexandre Vincent

"My Master at The University of Buckingham was an amazing intellectual experience. The University has a unique approach in terms of relationship between teachers and student. The close relationship allows student to benefit from a deeper understanding of the concepts studied, thus better quality of work delivered."

Sagir Musa

"The University of Buckingham is indeed a centre of academic excellence! The library, computers and internet services as well as the content and quality of education is superb. Its academic and non-academic staff are hospitable and dutifully but politely uncompromising. The environment/ the location is not only serene but is also naturally suitable for learning."

Bright Owusu Gyasi

"My experience in Buckingham was nothing short of an extraordinary experience, this experience was the one that served as the stepping stone for my future accomplishment, and the foundation for the setting up of my own policy think tank in Ghana with a branch in the United States, dubbed (Mamas Foundation-Centre for Diplomacy and Policy think tank)
The MA global affairs and diplomacy with international law was hugely stimulating, the department has innovative programme in intelligence and security, which comes with strong practised oriented content prioritising the development of strong analytical skills.
The contacts I gained from Buckingham has come not only as friends, but part of my network of associates whose knowledge and expertise I can chanced upon.
To me Buckingham is more than just a place for academics, it’s a place to be challenged, a place to be stretched, and a place to grow not only academically but also socially and all spheres of human endeavours. Academically Buckingham has challenged me to go beyond what I thought I was capable of doing, the school connected me to wonderful mentors who encouraged me to be creative, confident and curious, among them were diplomats, international lawyers, prominent UK politicians, global security experts just to mention but a few.

Kimberly Gamez

"I have chosen to apply in the programme MA in Global Affairs because pursuing a higher education in this field made me realise that my passion lies in the in-depth studies about other countries and the role they play in the international community.

During the course of my study at The University of Buckingham, I have found MA in Global Affairs to be the most fulfilling elements in which I envision myself to belong to someday. My interest in this field grew as we progressed in our learning experiences; and was motivated by our professors. I believe that the knowledge I will acquire in this endeavour will better prepare me for a career in global affairs.

The months that I have spent at The University of Buckingham were absolutely one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I can say that I have no regrets in my decision to go abroad for my Masters degree. Everything was a learning experience for me. The professors and staff in my department were all so accommodating; and were so kind to me. For me, I found Global Affairs to be the most fulfilling elements

I highly recommend The University of Buckingham because it gives me great comfort to know that I live and study in a safe and secured environment. Furthermore, the University gives quality education and the class sizes are small, which is good because the professor – student ratio and the sense of community spirit helps promote a condition conducive to learning."

Natalie Voorheis

While studying for my BA joint major in Art History and English at University College Dublin my interest in the arts and culture of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries emerged and I became aware that the historic interiors of these periods and the history of collection formation would be a path I would like to pursue in the future. I chose this MA in decorative arts and historic interiors because it stood out from the crowd of MA courses available and seemed like a perfect fit with my interests.

Some of my favourite moments of the year have included a tour of the private apartments at Versailles with John Whitehead. A week spent in Buckinghamshire studying Claydon, Blenheim Palace, Woburn House, Waddesdon and Boughton among others in the company of our great tutors Jeremy Howard and Barbara Lasic. Another highlight has been having the privilege of studying at length the collection of French decorative arts at The Wallace Collection, in the company of the curatorial staff. I would whole-heartedly recommend this MA to anyone considering studying the decorative arts. The access to collections and guidance we have received from experts in their fields has been second to none and I feel confident that the course has furnished me with the ability to move on towards further study. I am currently working on my MA dissertation “The collecting and display of eighteenth century decorative arts by Sir Alfred and Edith Chester Beatty” and hope to continue to further study in the near future.
