About the course

Masters in Sustainable Architecture

An ARB Part II Masters in Architecture taught at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT), the pioneer of sustainability practice. Intended specifically for students pursuing a career in Architecture, this course offers a unique combination of design-based academic study and practical hands-on learning.

CAT’s 40 years of sustainable education experience has led to the development of courses that not only tackle environmental issues, but focus on sustainability at the core of every aspect of learning. Teaching is delivered in the WISE building - itself an example of recent developments in sustainable construction - and includes a mix of studio- based design work, lectures, seminars and practicals.

Student Profile(s)

Janna Laan

5241.jpg “CAT’s a place which is full of people who have so much hope and energy. It’s more than a place to study, it’s a whole experience. ”
During her studies in Interior Architecture, Janna became very interested in sustainability and incorporated this passion into her undergraduate degree portfolio. After graduation she went travelling for a year which opened her eyes to the environmental issues faced on a global scale. Inspired to help change things for the better, Janna decided to study further with a strong focus on sustainability.
She was introduced to CAT by a previous student and decided to attend the Professional Diploma in Architecture Part Two. As her passion for sustainability was strongly evident in her portfolio she was able to build on her interior architecture undergraduate degree. She was drawn to CAT because she liked the centre’s perspective of looking at architecture within the built environment as a whole, and the determination to take on such a huge environmental challenge in the construction industry.
Straight out of CAT, Janna and a fellow MSc student set up a business called ‘building naturally’, which is a network directory for the natural building industry. In 2015, Janna also founded Grain Architecture: a design practice specialising in the use of natural materials, which has now taken on many projects across the south from house extensions and new-build houses to community developments. In the future, she aims to create a rural community with shared resources as model for rural development and agriculture, for a healthier and more resilient way of living - a project that she explored during her final project at CAT.
