LLM/PgDip/PgCert Intellectual Property and Information Rights

Course content

This programme explores the protection afforded by trademarks, patents, design rights and copyright. In addition, students explore current issues about the legitimacy and the proper boundaries regarding the ownership and exploitation of intellectual property rights. Students study Data Protection and Information Rights: the way that personal and other information is collected, used, shared and protected. The subject spans a wide range of current and evolving issues, such as data protection and privacy, access to public information, the risks and benefits of sharing information and technological developments such as the use of social media. Focus of further study may include the legal framework which governs the protection and exploitation of computers, software and the Internet by individuals and corporations, or the examination of key information governance legislation, common law and practice and the impact of new technologies on the uses of information and personal data.

The LLM is studied via a combination of on campus face-to-face teaching supported by online materials and communication. The programme is delivered by specialists within the Department and guest practitioners with legal expertise in the relevant areas. Students have the opportunity to expand their academic knowledge of law and to gain practical understanding of the law';s application. Students are encouraged to reflect on their knowledge, experience and practice, particularly through a process of peer interaction, in-class discussion, debate and group work.

A specialist qualification is often a desirable requirement for roles such as compliance officer, data protection officer, intellectual property manager and Chief Information Officer. The programme is accredited for Continuing Professional Development under the Solicitors Regulation Authority CPD scheme.
