Course Description

About the course

This course, based on work-related skills training, is for those wishing to become solicitors. The Legal Practice Course (LPC) equips you with the appropriate knowledge, skills and understanding of procedures and practice to embark effectively on the period of further training within a firm.

Only two days compulsory attendance per week. The nature of the course, makes it more flexible and enables you to meet other commitments

Students are taught in the state-of-the-art £35 million Hugh Aston Building, complete with its own mock courtroom, client interviewing room, an integrated law library and book shop.

Teaching and assessment

•Lectures are available to listen to online
•All face-to-face teaching takes place in small groups of around 16–18 students, where you will work on realistic practical exercises
•You will attend the university for face-to-face tuition for a 5 day foundation course at the start of the course and then for nine study weekends in the first year and eight study weekends in the second year
•You will also have to attend the university to take exams
•The Core Areas, Electives, Professional Conduct and Regulation, Solicitors’ Accounts and Wills and Administration of Estates are assessed by exam. All are open to book exams except Solicitors' Accounts
•You are also assessed in the course skills

Graduate careers

The LPC is a course of work-based skills training for those wishing to become solicitors. All students have access to our mentoring programme and can take part in pro bono activities offered.

Entry Requirements

You must have completed the academic stage of your training by obtaining either a qualifying law degree (a good honours degree) or the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL/CPE) following a first degree in a non-law subject. The SRA requires you to prove to us that you have a qualifying law degree or have met the CPE/GDL requirements. You need to do that before you start the LPC by providing us with a copy of your degree transcript or proof that you have successfully completed the GDL.
