This course is suitable for:
- recent and existing graduates who wish to move into careers in the process excellence field

Study mode and duration:
- MSc: 12 months full time; 24 months part time
- PgDip: 9 months full time; 21 months part time

You’ll study

Successful completion of all compulsory modules, two optional modules and a group project will lead to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma. MSc students also undertake an individual project.

Teaching staff

This programme is delivered by the Strathclyde Institute for Operations Management (SIOM). The delivery team comprises leading academics from Strathclyde Business School and the Faculty of Engineering.

Developing an innovative methodology to facilitate lifecycle supply chain sustainability assessment - Single Award

This is a call for applications for a funded PhD studentship at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Strathclyde, in the area of Supply Chain Sustainability Assessment. The PhD project aim is to develop a methodology for establishing a Lifecycle Supply Chain Indicator, which will be an easy to use metric that will pass information about the lifecycle environmental performance of a product or service from one link of the supply chain to the next one, allowing more informed decision making on supplier selection and simpler application of Lifecycle methodologies. Lately, supply chains have become increasingly international. This means outsourcing processes to and purchasing raw material, components or products from countries with lower production cost, but in many cases with lower environmental standards and regulations, as well as greatly increased transportation requirements. The driver for this trend has been merely financial, whereas the environmental effect has been greatly neglected, thus compromising the sustainability of supply chains. The PhD project will aim at developing a method that will provide a holistic picture of a suppliers’ environmental performance at a product/service level in a single indicator, using Lifecycle Analysis principles. Ultimately, the indicator value may be apparent on the final product or service, giving the final customer a tangible way of assessing the environmental performance and sustainability of the product.

Value of Scholarship(s)

The 3 year studentship will cover student fees and a tax free stipend of £13,863 per annum.


The student should have a first or second class Honours degree (minimum 2.1) or an MSc in industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, supply chain management or a similar discipline. Previous experience with Sustainability Assessment or Lifecycle Analysis software use and programming experience would be beneficial. Applicants must be able to demonstrate enthusiasm, creativity, resourcefulness and a mature approach to learning. Collaboration with industrial partners will be sought during the duration of the PhD in order to apply the findings of the research. Therefore it is expected that the candidate will be willing to be exposed to work with industrial partners.
