Leadership and Management - MSc

Course Description

This innovative work-based course provides an excellent learning platform for aspiring or existing leaders and managers. The course develops knowledge, skills and competence in personal development, leadership, management and strategy to help you take your next step in the workplace. You will develop research skills, critical thinking and effective organisational improvement techniques as well as exploring all the personal competences associated with leadership and management in complex, dynamic and excellence-focused organisations.

It’s not all about cutting-edge theory; there are plenty of opportunities for hands-on practical experience. You will be encouraged to build leadership and management experience through work-related assignments which will contribute to personal, career and workplace improvement.

Learn From The Best

You will benefit from the contributions of our experienced teaching team, both professionally and academically. Their combined backgrounds, professional connections and expertise include a vast range of situations which they draw from, to inform their teaching.

The team who teach on this course have contributed to academic thinking in their specialist areas via publication in journals including the International Small Business Journal, Gender in Management: An International Journal and European Journal of Training and Development. They have contributed to academic texts, and are regularly asked to speak at conferences.

Teaching And Assessment

Leader development is continuous and ongoing and not episodic in nature. This means that integrating three components the formal learning experience, peer learning and on the job application will contribute towards enhancing leader effectiveness. Furthermore, allowing you to diagnose your own learning needs, formulating learning goals, identifying resources for learning, choosing and implementing learning strategies and evaluating the achievement of your own learning goals will enhance learner engagement.

Assessment is a learning experience in itself. Our assignments are designed to assess your knowledge and understanding of key theoretical concepts, your practical and transferable skills development, and your ability to apply these to your personal and/or organisational practices.

Learning Environment

We make significant use of the University’s eLearning Platform which provides a range of materials designed to develop your confidence and capability as a work-based learner. You will have access to recommended reading lists, formative workplace learning activities and summative assessment guidance. Weekly emails will direct you to learning materials and tasks to support taught sessions, while the eLP also gives you access to discussion forums where you can interact with tutors and peers.

Your teaching and learning plan represents your route map through each module. This will not only set out the content and objectives of each workshop or other formal contact session, but also identify the nature and aims of directed learning, and provide guidance for independent learning.

Research-Rich Learning

Your learning will be underpinned by a research-rich approach, which will include discussing the potential implications of business, management and leadership research findings as well as conducting your own research into organisational practice and your own personal practices and behaviour in the workplace.

This approach has been designed to boost your intellectual autonomy, collaborative working, critical and independent enquiry, discipline-specific creativity, and project management – all skills which are valued by employers seeking engaged, self-directed employees who can demonstrate strong leadership potential.

Give Your Career An Edge

The underlying philosophy of the course is that it will contribute to your continuing professional development and enhance your potential for future development. It is designed to meet the majority of the Knowledge and Understanding criteria required in the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for management and leadership (2008). The standards are based around six competence areas: Managing Self and Personal Skills, Providing Direction, Facilitating Change, Working with People, Using Resources and Achieving Results.

As a graduate you will be able to conceptualise, theorise and undertake research which addresses complex issues and which advances understanding within your specific discipline or practice. You will have learned to contribute to the creation of new knowledge and /or applications to practice within your discipline through a critical understanding of the processes through which knowledge is created. You will also be able to formulate balanced judgements.

Your Future

This course has been developed in compliance with the QAA benchmark statement for Master’s Degrees in Business and Management (2007) to enable you to develop your leadership and management capability. It is an innovative postgraduate work-based degree which provides an excellent learning platform for aspiring or existing leaders and managers.

You will emerge as a highly capable professional who can apply best practices to complex business challenges and continue to grow in an increasingly globalised and fast-changing environment. The course has been designed to provide opportunities for individual and workplace improvement, achieved through a mix of directed and independent learning activity supported by individual guidance.
