The MA in Leadership and Management (Education) is for you if you are, or aspire to be, a leader or manager in an educational setting. You may already be working in school settings or other institutions, such as the health service or the police force. This postgraduate course is suitable for those working within a nursery setting, through to those working in an adult learning environment.
You will gain a deeper and broader understanding of the latest developments in the sector, engage critically with educational and management theory ideas and research and apply your learning to your own practice. In addition, you will also learn from others in the group, and be encouraged to share good practice and develop links with colleagues from other organisations.
Students on the MA Leadership and Management (Education) course are taught by a range of lecturers some who are university based, LEA based or even head teachers. This ensures the practice discussed is both relevant and up to date. Many students are able to transfer the learning directly into their school classroom or workplace, to enhance their skills and further their own career path.
Additional accreditation is available through the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) for students studying on the Leadership and Management (Education) course.
In common with all of the MA Education programmes, you will take the core module Research Methodology. Three other modules are then selected - at least two of which must be chosen from the specialist modules below. You may then choose one relevant option module from within the MA Education programme.
- Managing, Teaching, Learning and Assessment - Topics covered include the management of learning, the wellbeing agenda, the role of senior managers and the management of new curriculum initiatives, assessment for learning, pupil peer and self-assessment, the use of assessment evidence in research/inspection documentation, and analysis of quantitative assessment data to promote organisational improvement.
- Developing People in Organisations - This module should appeal to those working as, or aspiring to be, leaders in institutions with an educational setting. Topics covered include team building, effective leadership, appraisal and mentoring and managing change in organisations. Different leadership models are considered alongside national initiatives and as well as a consideration of decision making strategies to overcome resistance.
- Strategic Management and Accountability - This module should appeal to those working as, or aspiring to be, leaders in institutions with an educational setting. Topics covered are institutional vision, managing change and strategic plans and their implementation.
- Dissertation To complete the full MA you will present a 17,000 word research dissertation and a 3,000 word research dissemination plan.
Learning and teaching methods
Most students following the part-time programme spend two years on the taught modules (typically one evening per week) and undertake their dissertation in their third year. Participants are allowed to take a maximum of five years to complete the whole programme.
Full-time students are able to complete the whole programme within 12 months, although some take a little longer to finish writing their dissertation.
Awards are available at Postgraduate Certificate level (after completion of two taught modules) and Postgraduate Diploma level (after completion of four taught modules). To complete the full MA you will present a 17,000 word research dissertation and a 3,000 word research dissemination plan
