Master of Science (MSc)
The MSc thesis should be focused on a novel question within the student’s chosen discipline which allows the student to learn and fully appreciate the entire research process from the generation of an idea through to the publication of their findings in a peer-reviewed journal. The entire MSc should be focused so that the student can complete data collection and defend their thesis within a two year time period. Students are encouraged to present their work at one or more national conferences specific to their field of study.

Each student in this Program is required to complete a minimum of two graduate level half-courses. Additional graduate level course work is often required and is determined at the discretion of the Supervisory Committee. Early in the program of studies, each student must prepare a research proposal in a standard format. This document is critically reviewed by the supervisory committee. In order to fulfill the requirements of this degree program, each student is required to write a Master’s thesis and successfully defend it during an oral exam. Standard University procedures, provided by the Faculty of Graduate Studies are adhered to regarding thesis format, composition of Supervisory Committee and completion of the oral exam. A typical M.Sc. program is completed in two to three years of full-time study. Provisions are in place which allows students who enter the M.Sc. Program and make exceptional progress to move directly into the Doctoral Program. This opportunity to move directly to the Doctoral Program requires a strong recommendation of the supervisory committee and approval of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
