Student Profiles

Zoe Bernos

I'm from France and I felt I wanted to study in another country to gain a different experience. I found a university in France that has a partnership with UCB and I discovered UCB had a good international reputation for its hospitality courses. I really wanted to discover how things are taught in England (it is extremely different from university study in France).

My time at UCB was enriching and I will remember it forever. The lecturers at UCB really care for their students and they helped me discover new ways of working.

After my MA, I took a receptionist job back in France. Thanks to what I learned at UCB, I was quickly promoted to head receptionist and became their Guest Relations Agent, training new staff and supporting the managerial team. I then decided to look for a new career in the UK as my time at UCB had made me passionate about hospitality in England. I became a Shift Leader in a Crowne Plaza with the opportunity to become a Guest Relations Manager in their new department, so I have finally found a job that I am completely happy with. One day, I would like to make General Manager and run my own hotel.

My advice to students is to work hard and show your employers what you can do. You might have to start at the bottom, but this is where you learn everything about the real hospitality industry.

Marta Suchomska

Marta chose to study at UCB because of its reputation and the way the staff and students conducted themselves prior to enrolment.

“All of my enquiries were handled really efficiently by the staff,” said Marta, who currently works in a conference centre, but has a long-term goal of becoming an independent hospitality advisor.

“When I finally came here to study, the standards they had set beforehand were kept very high.

“I would say my favourite element of the course is that you are able to interact with and learn from UCB’s intelligent and highly experienced lecturers.

My main piece of advice to anyone thinking of taking this course is to just give it a go."

Scholarships

These scholarships are open to applicants from any country. Applicants must demonstrate excellence in academic achievement.
The award of an Academic Excellence Scholarship is subject to any necessary visa clearance by the UK immigration authorities. An offer of an Academic Excellence Scholarship will be made to successful applicants and this offer may be used where necessary as evidence to the UK authorities of certain costs being met. However if a visa is not permitted the Scholarship will be withdrawn and there is no automatic reconsideration at any future point.

Value of Scholarship(s)

Up to £1000 off the cost of tuition fees, for one year only

Eligibility

Applicants must have accepted an offer of a place on a full-time taught programme at UCB and the chosen programme should be of at least one year's duration and normally lead to an academic award at Higher Education level. Applicants must not previously have been enrolled on the programme concerned, previously been enrolled on a FdA programme at the University in the same subject area (if entering the final year of a first degree programme) or have previously received a scholarship from the University.

Application Procedure

Applicants must complete the standard application form. Ensure that the category of scholarship/fee waiver applied for is clearly noted and provide full documentary evidence of academic excellence with the application. Evidence of Academic Excellence may include outstanding achievements in study (substantially in excess of that normally expected of students), support for an institution (for example through outstanding levels of commitment to supporting or working with fellow students) or the completion of a highly regarded research activity.
