Intellectual Property Law offers a very exciting and fascinating area of law which focuses on the protection of moral rights of innovation and creativity across works of art, industrial design, novel concepts, trademarks, writing and many other unique created works. Intellectual Property Law crosses into Patent Law and it has to be considered at start up, growth and maturity when new products are considered to ensure multinational business of all types, organisations and individuals protect their right to trade effectively.

You can be involved in setting up rights for start up companies and further down the line when a business is established you may be protecting rights across several countries where different directives affect the way in which the law is interpreted. All Intellectual Property Law exists under several iterations of the Berne Convention of 1886. The law is constantly evolving and challenged by the latest business practice to reform agreements in light of new technology and methods of business. Mass communications and the digital age have offered some fascinating challenges to traditional methods of protection in several artistic areas.

Intellectual property is closely associated with international trade and global business or at least business which has the potential to be affected globally, but it is also local with brands setting up and bring protected everywhere. You find out how trade fits together with intellectual property law within courses such as World Trade Organisation: GATT, European Economic and International Commercial Arbitration. You learn the essential aspects to copyright and patents and their differences to enable sound business decisions. You understand the trade mark process and you learn how to protect innovation at the start. The knowledge, skills and experience you gain can be applied to a multitude of industries and not just the more obvious creative arts areas and you will find some fascinating case law to further widen your interest in the subject.
