Course content

It is estimated that 70% of a typical company’s value now lies in its intangible assets. This LLM in Intellectual Property and Commercial Practice course focuses on intangible or ‘hidden’ assets and explores how companies can manage them in an effective commercial manner.

Intellectual Property and Commercial Practice Course Structure

The LLM in Intellectual Property and Commercial Practice programme is modular, with students needed to accumulate 180 credits to graduate.

The Intellectual Property and Commercial Practice programme is divide in to two parts:

  • Part 1 consists of four modules, each weighted at 30 credits

Following successful completion of the taught modules, Intellectual Property and Commercial Practice students may proceed to part 2:

  • The second part of this LLM consists of two research projects
  • At least one of these projects must be written on the subject of the Law of Intellectual Assets Management and Transactions
  • The projects are customarily researched and written up over the summer period and are designed to enable students to develop their research skills

We offer a wide range of full modules (taught from September till May/June)- It is compulsory for students on the Intellectual Property and Commercial Practice programme to study Law of Intellectual Assets Management & Transactions. Students will be required to take 3 modules from the following list: International Intellectual Property Law; International Corporate Law and Governance; E-Commerce; Competition Law; International Commercial Arbitration; Ship and Other Mobile Assets Finance Law.

Intellectual Property and Commercial Practice students are taught in small classes to encourage active discussion. Teaching is supported by the use of our Blackboard virtual learning environment, which facilitates online learning. This also gives students access to course materials and shared areas for group work and discussion.

All LLM modules in Intellectual Property and Commercial Practice are assessed using a combination of coursework and examination, with each carrying an equal weighting of 50%.

Meet our student

Jianya obtained her LLM in Intellectual Property and Commercial Practice at Swansea University. During her studies, she worked towards establishing a formal relationship between Zhejiang T&C and Capital Law in Cardiff.

She now works as an IP lawyer for the Zhejiang T&C Law firm, the top law firm in the Zhejiang Province in China. Her practice focuses on copyright matters, especially related to films and television, music and other works.
