Course content

The world economy has been undergoing a rapid transformation from a capital intensive age to a knowledge-based age. The entire Asia-Pacific region is endeavoring to nurture businesses to meet the challenges of this transformation. Joining the Department of Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management as a postgraduate student gives you the opportunity to gain a comprehensive grasp of both technological and managerial aspects of contemporary issues in this field and to make a contribution to progress in driving the world forward by improving technology management and operations management.

Research in the Department runs along two main axes: Logistics Management & Operations Management, and Design & Manufacturing Systems. Along these lines, the Department investigates a range of subjects encompassing Logistics Management, Service Operations Management, Dynamic Pricing and Revenue Management, Financial Engineering, Product and Service Design, Quality Management, and Ergonomics. Our research excellence is internationally recognized and demonstrated by numerous distinguished faculty and student honors presented. Graduates of the Department have established careers at the Georgia Institute of Technology, National University of Singapore, Tsinghua University and Shanghai Jiaotong University as well as at companies such as Burberry and Gap Inc.

The Department has 19 full-time faculty members, all with PhDs from first-tier universities, and around 200 potgraduate students. The Department encourages all those with integrity, creativity and ambition to expand their horizons.

The MPhil focuses on strengthening students’ knowledge in their chosen area of concentration, and training for engineering research and development. The program is highly suited to individuals who aspire to take a leading technical role in high value-added business organizations.

Research Foci
The Department covers two main research areas:

Design and manufacturing systems
Product and service design, quality management, human factors and ergonomics, biomechanics and cognitive decisions, and service system engineering.

Logistics management and Operations Management
Logistics and supply chain management, dynamic pricing and revenue management, operations research and stochastic modeling, financial engineering and risk management, and service operations management.

The Department has built partnerships with major service industry sectors, including logistics, service provision and product design. In particular, the Logistics and Supply Chain Management Institute has been established to transfer research results and assist decision-making and more efficient operations. The Advanced Manufacturing Institute is also committed to advanced research on product design.
