The UK has a growing need for graduates with advanced biotechnology qualifications to meet growing needs of existing industries and to create new enterprise in a sector experiencing a revolution due to the advances in research and technology which has catapulted new industries and transformed existing industries. There is also a growing need for environmental responsibility and understanding across process and methods of production. The programme provides courses which satisfy the needs of industry but also allow for strong human understanding across small molecule drug discovery, biosciences, microbiology, genetics, genome enabled medicine, sequencing, biologics and more. These areas are in rapid growth currently however there is a skills gap which has been identified by the industry as a result.

We will provide you with in-depth training in life sciences and technologies. We will deliver a focused teaching experience that includes a placement with industry-relevant training.

You will be given specific training to address the skills gap identified by the Biopharma/Life sciences industry. This is the focus of the MSc Industrial Biotechnology programme. As part of the industrial placement, which will have direct relevance to industry needs, you will have access to a wide range of opportunities. This could be in the university or with external spin-out companies, local SMEs or Medical laboratories as part of the placement. The Institute of Medical Sciences features a cutting edge technology facilities (Centre for Genome Enabled Biology & Medicine, Proteomics, Cytometry, In Vivo Imaging and Analytical Chemistry).

A number of exciting courses are availble for you to choose from. After you graduate, you will be skilled to meet industry demand or develop your own ideas towards enterprise. There are several spin out companies as a result of programmes and study at advanced level at the university within biotechnology, medical sciences and drug discovery.

You may also like to visit the Scottish Innovation Centres to find out more about the innovations which are growing industries in Scotland and globally in the life science, biotechnology, health, stratified medicine areas and the overlap with the need for sensors and smart technologies to enable and speed up innovations and therapies. You benefit from multi disciplinary learning, leading academic and industry experts, opinion leaders and 'live' situations.
