Student Profiles

Zainab Bahman

Background:

I completed my BSc majoring in Biochemistry and a minor in Microbiology from The University of Kuwait.

Why Nottingham:

After graduation I had to do an extensive search on the best universities offering courses that include the field of immunology. University of Nottingham was recommended to me by a couple of my professors at Kuwait University and then I searched for it and found out that it was among the top 10 universities according to my cultural office rankings. I then asked around and the university as well as the city were highly spoken of. Also, it was among the universities that graduates would find a job easily.

The course:

Everything taught from day 1 up to the last day of my research project was interesting and enjoyable. I have gained more experience in one year that I might have gained in 4 years of BSc. Lecturers were knowledgeable and approachable. The most important aspect was that learning is fun!

Research facilities:

All labs were well equipped and organised with the newest and highly rated machinery and reagents. My research project was exciting and provided me with new learning horizons and have obtained extra skills that would allow me to thrive in other research areas.

Support:

All staff were friendly and provided help, support and encouragement throughout all stages of the MSc course either academically or socially.

Lissa Sutherland

Background

I earned my undergraduate degree in Neuroscience from the University of Toronto. During my degree I was able to take an introductory immunology course and enjoyed it so much that I decided to change track and focus on studying immunology.

Why Nottingham?

Moving from Canada to the UK was a big decision and it was important to me to earn a masters degree from a reputable institution. I looked at many different institutions and courses and decided that Immunology and Allergy at the University of Nottingham was the best. The course offers a wide range of taught modules that cover everything from an introduction to immunology to autoimmunity and therapeutic strategies as well as a practical lab based research component.

The Course

Courses are taught by experts in the field with years of lab and technical experience. All modules were well structured and comprehensive. The content covered was up-to-date and based on recent publications in the literature. The lecturers were all very approachable and helpful. The course definitely prepares students well for their futures both in academia and in industry. During the course I was offered a PhD and many of my colleagues obtained jobs soon after completing the course.

Research Facilities

The final part of the course is a four month lab based research project. The projects offered were from a wide range of subjects which allowed all students to choose a project that interested them. The labs themselves were state-of-the-art and the supervisors were extremely supportive and helpful whether you had lots of experience or had never been in a lab before.

Support

The international office made the move from Canada an easy transition. Their visa application help service was extremely helpful and ensured my application was done correctly the first time. During your time at the university each student is assigned a personal tutor to help them along the way with any issues they may be having and to provide them with advice for their future.
