Studying the Masters in Management at Derby has been great! I’ve met alot of new people from many different cultures, I’ve had a fantastic time on the residential, and I’ve enjoyed the general challenge that Masters level study offers.
The masters course allows alot of flexibility through the modules that can be chosen. I’ve studied a mix of these areas in order to give me a thorough knowledge of the different elements of business. I’ve particularly enjoyed doing Project Management and Entrepreneurial Management as I can tailor assignments to business ideas I have for the future – I plan to start my own business eventually.
My verbal and written communications have improved dramatically on the course. As these skills developed throughout the year, my confidence in my own abilities also increased. I think that this definitely one of the main benefits for me from doing the course.
The lecturers have been very friendly and supportive - both academically and personally. In fact, students and course leaders often meet up socially for drinks and meals!
The Residential was a brilliant experience. As well as having a laugh, with good food and good accommodation, we undertook various team activities which were both fun and challenging and certainly helped me find out a lot about myself!
I’d definitely recommend doing a Masters in Management degree at Derby because as well as the flexibility in what you can study, you meet so many new friends from different cultural backgrounds – you’ll probably never experience this in the same way as you would doing a Masters degree at Derby!
My first degree was in computer science after which I joined a government organisation where my work mainly involved personnel management, administration and HR practices. Since I had this work experience in HR, I decided to study for my Masters degree in Human Resource Management.”
Studying the MA HRM was a very exhilarating experience. It was a major career changing decision for me as I had a stable job and was progressing well, but I decided for my personal satisfaction and future growth that it was important to enhance my education.
For me HRM was best suited as it would improve my business and corporate understanding at a higher level, and help me to gain vital skills to enhance business professionalism and maximize self productivity.
The programme is planned in a wonderful way. It gives the opportunity to refresh the knowledge of basic subjects of business studies and of key business functions. There is also a lot of flexibility in the substantial variety of modules to choose from that depend on individual interest. Another very important feature of the course is a three day residential where we were taken away from the University for outdoor activities. Apart from the academic learning this gives an excellent opportunity to build relations with other students.
The course isn’t just a whole cluster of theories but the practical application of these theories, which makes it more exciting. There are a lot of case studies of real and hypothetical organisations which makes it very interesting, and not only improved my conceptual understanding but also helped me to retain the knowledge too.
The teaching methods are very innovative and the lectures are very interactive, so everyone has an opportunity to participate. The tutors are also very helpful and co-operative in matters such as personal issues, academic advice and personal development.
During the course I was able to interact with students from all over the world and diverse backgrounds. It gave me a wonderful opportunity to learn about their culture and traditions, and it also made me understand how different values, beliefs and practices lead to people thinking differently.
