Course content

Through flexible study options, this CIPD accredited course will prepare you for the management of human resources in a global context. You will gain the relevant knowledge and skills to become and effective HR professional and meet the needs of today’s rapidly changing organisations.

You will develop an understanding of why and how HR should contribute to the strategic development of your organisation, how to make an effective contribution to the HR function within your organisation and develop your competence in a wide range of professional skills.

We have an online simulated organisation, The Loch View Hotel, which we use for teaching purposes to ensure you have the opportunity to apply theory to a practical situation.

What you will study

STAGE 1

You will develop a grounding in the core area of organisational behaviour and the professional and research skills required to undertake postgraduate study and a career in HR. Key knowledge and skills are developed in HR functional areas which allow you to become familiar with both theory and practice. 

STAGE 2

HR functional skills are further developed with regard to talent management, employee relations, recruitment and selection, and training and development. The final two modules allow you to investigate strategic HRM and demonstrate your practical capabilities by undertaking a Research Report to Management.

STAGE 3

The Capstone module is designed to provide you with an opportunity to integrate Masters level knowledge and skills by independently working on an applied academic study, a professional dissertation or, where appropriate, business consultancy project from a degree related discipline. Personal and professional skills such as research, oral presentation and teamwork will be developed.

Teaching and assessment

On Campus Study

You will learn through a combination of lectures, seminars and workshop sessions. These comprise of a mix of group study, discussion, simulation and presentations of findings by teams and individuals.

Access to our virtual learning environment, CampusMoodle, is also provided giving you access from home to learning materials (including videos, e-books and journals).

On Campus Day Release Part-time courses are delivered in parallel with the On Campus Full-time cohort but you will only study 2 modules (30 credits) per semester.

Online Distance Learning

Our virtual learning environment, CampusMoodle offers you flexibility of where and when you can study, offering full and open access to tutors and other class members. You have the benefit of being part of a group of learners with the invaluable opportunity to participate in active, group-related learning within a supportive online community setting. CampusMoodle will provide you with lectures and course materials, discussion forums and live chat. 

ACTIVITY SUMMARY

The options below represent full-time on-campus delivery, distance learning and part-time delivery may differ.

  • Lectures - 15-30 students per group, 96 hours per semester
  • Tutorial - 15-30 students per group, 48 hours per semester
  • Project Supervision - 1-4 students per group, 12 hours per semester
  • Independent Study - 456 hours per semester

INDEPENDENT STUDY

The course encourages you to work autonomously and to take responsibility for your own learning and professional development. The main vehicles for independent learning are Personal and Professional Development and the Capstone Project, where you will further develop your learning in: the nature of research, sourcing relevant information, data collection and analysis, research ethics and appropriate communication.

STAFF DELIVERING ON THIS COURSE

Academic staff who teach on this course have worked in a range of professional backgrounds, are ‘business-connected’ and use professional networks and their academic research to ensure teaching is professionally relevant and cutting edge.

Our staff have either achieved Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, or are working towards this. This is a professional recognition of lecturer practice, impact and leadership in teaching and learning. In addition, many have featured in the annual Support and Teaching staff with Appreciation and Recognition (STAR) awards voted by the students and organised by RGU:Union.

We have a proactive Industry Liaison Group who provide input to course redesign and may contribute to classes through guest lectures and masterclasses.

ASSESSMENT

Please note the below represent full-time on-campus delivery, distance learning and part-time delivery will differ.

Typically students are assessed each year:

  • 2 written exams, typically for 3 hours
  • 1 written assignment, including essay
  • 2 reports
  • 1 Capstone project
  • 1 portfolio
  • 2 practical skills assessments
  • 1 research report to management

Job prospects 

All organisations need to have the right number of people with the right skills at the right time to ensure optimum productivity, hence the importance of HR practitioners. 

Graduates of this course find employment in many diverse industries throughout the world as a result of the knowledge and skills they have gained during the course. Example industries include public and private sectors, energy, hospitality, construction and financial services.

Previous graduates have gone on to roles such as HR Business Partner, Learning and Development Advisor, Group HR Director and Independent HR Consultant.
