Course content

Whether you want to work in a stand-alone human resource management (HRM) department, be involved in leadership development or hone your expertise in employment law and relations, there are a growing number of job opportunities for those who put people at the heart of what they do.

This course is designed to prepare you for a career in HRM whilst also offering you the opportunity to apply for professional accreditation from the Chartered Institute of Professional Development (CIPD).

Informed by the latest research and professional practice in human resource management and development (HRM&D), the programme enables you to gain specialist knowledge as well as develop critical thinking and research skills.

On completion of the programme you will have achieved the equivalent of the CIPD Advanced Diploma, which means you will be eligible to apply for new Associate or to upgrade to Chartered Status of CIPD membership.

Wherever you are in your HRM career, this course will help you develop the intellectual, leadership, professional and transferable skills employers look for.

Modules and Learning

On this programme we believe in 'learning by doing', in this case the reflective-practitioner approach. In the past the CIPD has referred to this approach as the development of the 'Thinking Performer'. Using your own organisation as a vehicle for learning both in class-room activities and for assessment purposes enables you to demonstrate impact and effectiveness as an HR practitioner.

Your modules are delivered by a series of sessions based around formal input, workshop activities, case discussions and practical activities, supported by tutor-led directed learning.

A postgraduate core curriculum also enhances your employability prospects. Part of this is a weekend residential in October/November which is in addition to your weekly studies and is designed to develop students' leadership and team-working abilities through increased self-awareness and knowledge of group processes.

All students will be expected to complete an individual Human Resource Management & Development report/dissertation which also includes recommendations and a feasibility study based on CIPD professional requirements.

You will be assessed using a range of methods, both formative and summative with the CIPD framework informing assessment practices.

Additional Costs

It is advised that students purchase a membership to CIPD to gain their CIPD accreditation on completion of the course. The cost of membership can vary per annum and students are advised to confirm fees direct with CIPD. For illustration purposes, cost of 12 months' membership for 2018/2019 (ending 30 June 2019) is £135. (If students are in employment, employers may wish to fund this fee). CIPD advises that if practitioners do not join CIPD as student members and join instead after completing their qualification, they will be subject to a late registration fee (in addition to any other fee levied). The late registration fee for Advanced Level qualifications is currently £200. Whilst books are made available via the University Library some students may wish to purchase key texts.

Your Future

After completing your programme, there are many options available. As a number of employers see the CIPD qualification as the 'must have' for promotion to senior HR related positions, you could use the skills, specialist knowledge and experience gained during your two years at Newcastle Business School to develop with your current employer, whether in a specific HR position or more general people-related role. Or, you could see your future with a new employer in a similar or entirely different sector.

We have seen students transition easily from small private sector businesses to taking on roles in large public sector organisations such as NHS Trusts and Local Authorities. Past students have also moved from general policy and practice HR to the specific areas of Equality and Reward Management including Pensions. There are also many opportunities available if you want to change your career entirely, as your enhanced skills, knowledge, and experience can be successfully transferred to many different avenues. Past students have moved into consultancy, mentoring, business development, project management, and entrepreneurship. Senior practitioners with chartered CIPD accreditation and appropriate management experience, have also found that the MA in HRM & D has provided them with a route into teaching.
