Human Resource Development (MSc/PGDip)


Course Description

This course aims to enhance the professional capability of of anyone working in the field of Human Resources and will enable you to make a significant professional contribution to the management of Human Resources Development in an organisation or sector by using the following skills:

- personal drive and effectiveness

- development and leadership
- business understanding
- professional and ethical behaviour
- continuing learning
- analytical and intuitive / creative thinking

You can choose to study the PgDip as a stand alone qualification or you can choose to complete the full Masters qualification. Both courses are approved by the Chartered Institute of Professional Development (CIPD) and meet the CIPD Advanced Standards. This means on successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma or MSc you'll become an Associate member of the CIPD. In addition the programme provides you with the knowledge to upgrade to either Chartered Member or Chartered Fellow levels of professional membership, providing you meet the respective criteria as set by the CIPD.

Benefits of PgDip

The PG Dip HRD is designed for busy professionals working within the context of personnel/human resource management and the allied professions, seeking personal or career development but who may not have the time to commit to a full masters degree.

Benefits of Msc

The MSc course has all of the benefits of the PgDip – including CIPD accreditation – plus a research methods and dissertation module that provides students with an opportunity to conduct an independent in-depth study into related HRD issue.

Modules

Students studying for the MSc HRD will be required to complete the four core units in Year 1. In Year 2 you will take Research Methods plus one core unit and two electives. Each year of the programme features a residential weekend as an integral part of the overall course.

The dissertation (MSc) or management report (PG Dip) gives you the opportunity to link theory with practice within an organisational context. It involves the identification and refinement of an Human Resource Development issue or problem, undertaking an in-depth literature review, the collection of primary data, and the analysis and evaluation of this data so as to produce a set of implementable and/or secondary recommendations.

The taught units are assessed by a mixture of individual assignments, group presentations and by examination at the end of some units.

Year 1:
- Power and constraint: the strategic context
- Leadership and management skills
- Leadership and HR strategy
- Learning and talent development

Year 2:
- Research methods for HR
- Leadership and management development
- Management report (8000 words) (PG Dip only)

Plus two electives (subject to minimum numbers: at least one elective to be taken from group A)

Electives A:
- Leading and managing change
- Managing coaching and mentoring

Electives B:
- Managing reward
- Employment law
- Managing the employee relationship

Year 3:
- Dissertation (20,000 words) (MSc only)

Employability

The programme is designed for professionals or line managers who are working in the field of Human Resource Development or Management.

Students who have successfully completed the course have found it has enabled them to take on additional responsibilities and/or move onto more senior positions within the HR or Management field.
