Students will be from a variety of professional backgrounds, including doctors, nurses, managers and other healthcare professions. The programme aims to create a new generation of healthcare professionals who understand and can provide solutions for the challenges faced by health systems and healthcare organisations in the 21st century.

The MSc reflects contemporary themes and developments within healthcare management. You will discuss the latest understanding of how to successfully manage healthcare organisations and acquire the skills and confidence to challenge, innovate and solve problems.

The programme draws from the knowledge of leading academics from across disciplines and healthcare experts to offer both a comprehensive research-driven theoretical framework and practice-oriented knowledge and management skills. It provides an in-depth understanding and specialised knowledge of a number of subjects related to healthcare organisations, such as leadership, management, financial reporting, innovation, quality and safety.

You will benefit from the interdisciplinarity, uniqueness and flexibility of this programme. It brings together the significant expertise and reputation of the University's Faculty of Health Sciences and Faculty of Social Sciences and Law. It also benefits from the presence of world-class cross-disciplinary research institutions, such as the Elizabeth Blackwell Institute, along with the partnership and collaboration between the University and major healthcare providers in the South West.

Programme structure

The master's programme features six discrete taught units and a research dissertation. All units are mandatory.

Each taught unit covers an important healthcare sub-field, which will equip you with the practice-oriented knowledge, theoretical frameworks and decision-making skills needed in your chosen employment.

You will have the opportunity to integrate the knowledge acquired from different healthcare disciplines into a project focused on patient safety, risk management and quality improvement.

A mixture of teaching methods will be employed during the intensive three-day face-to-face learning blocks, including lectures, seminars, tutorials, case study discussions, group work and computer labs. You will be encouraged to learn in a structured and facilitated learning environment. Problem-based approaches will be central to all learning and will be employed where appropriate; these may include your own real-life management challenges.
