Objectives

There is a consultancy module to apply your health management skills for a client on a business development issue.

The course benefits from a large cohort of up to 45 students with great networking and peer support and diversity of experiences and international backgrounds, on the other hand ensuring close personal contact with teaching staff.

Placements

The MSc Health Management has an extensive internship programme. Internships are programme opportunities and subject to application. Prior qualifications, professional experience and skills need to match with the projects that sponsors have available. Internships with participating organisations can last from two months up to five months, and you would work for two days a week.

Projects are in areas such as strategy, human resources, quality improvement and service evaluation. In addition we offer research internships at the Centre for Healthcare Innovation Research (CHIR). This interdisciplinary Centre brings together researchers from different disciplines across Cass Business School and the School of Health Sciences at City, University of London. These internships provide opportunities to be coached in healthcare research supported by an experienced researcher, and to be cited as a co-author in publications.

Internships are a unique opportunity to build your CV and experience whilst studying, and improve your employability, or move in a new career direction.

Teaching and learning

Teaching is provided by leading academics in the fields of business and the health care sector as well as respected guest speakers from the health industry and scientific community who join us to share experiences, and insights on future trends across the health sector.

Course delivery is approximately:

  • 30% Lectures by health management team
  • 30% Speakers from health industries and scientific communities
  • 40% Interactive learning in teams

Assessment

The assessment strategy reflects the management task, with a wide range of assessments allowing flexibility to tailor business knowledge to career needs. Collaborative group assessments emphasise communication and influencing skills as well as providing opportunities to address larger inter-connected challenges. Written assignments emphasise the principles of management and the core business functions and develop skills in organisation analysis and preparing business reports. Exams focus on specific applied skill sets for managers and leaders.

The health management consultancy project embodies the client-facing emphasis of the course, and the approach to assessment.

Modules

The MSc Health Management emphasises practical and applied business skills and insights from across the global health sector. The course comprises seven modules and a 12-15,000 word health sector dissertation.

The curriculum is designed to focus in-depth on the essential skills that are the building blocks of management and leadership proficiency, and organisational leadership. It encompasses a wide range of disciplines. There is the diversity and different perspectives of those you will be studying with, as well as the insights of the expert guest speakers.
