The UCD School of Archaeology is a small, friendly and dynamic environment in which to study archaeology. The School includes ten full-time teaching staff, all of whom are acknowledged experts in their fields of research. Other staff members include a draughtsperson, a computer and information technology specialist and an excavation and post-excavation specialist. For details, please see the staff pages. The School has been involved in significant international archaeological events in recent years, most notably hosting the World Archaeological Congress in 2008. We have been active in facilitating debates about the role of archaeology in modern Ireland, and the challenges it faces. Out staff are active in research in many countries and our vibrant PhD community conduct very high quality research on a great diversity of topics. Please visit our news and publication sections for details.
Our taught graduate programmes emphasize small class sizes and seminar based learning, with an exclusive reliance on continuous assessment. We provide training in a range of key transferable skills: making effective presentations, report and essay writing, designing and managing research projects, working in groups. The school has a successful programme of visiting speakers and an active Archaeological Society, and we have a full schedule of research seminars running throughout the year.
UCD is located just south of Dublin City Centre and thus offers access to all of the amenities one would expect of a UNESCO ‘City of Literature’, with a rich cultural tradition – both high brow and somewhat less elevated! The archaeologically rich Irish landscape is within easy reach of UCD and forms a key component of our teaching and research. Beyond the immediate attractions of the archaeology, the Wicklow and South Dublin mountains are within easy reach of the city, and offer fantastic outdoor leisure pursuits. Dublin itself is an extremely well connected transport hub, and provides a very good base for exploring Ireland more generally.
