Course content

Do you already have an understanding of governance? This course aims to enhance your capacity to develop and implement policies in both the public sector and NGOs.

You’ll explore questions of:
-Good governance
-How governance affects development
-How the quality of governance can be improved

You’ll learn to critically assess competing theories in development. This will allow you to increase effectiveness, accountability and legitimacy of governance in specific settings.

Accreditation

This course is IAC/EADI accredited. Sussex is proud to be the first UK university to gain this accreditation.

The International Accreditation Council for Global Development Studies and Research wishes to influence proactively the process of quality assurance for global development studies and has developed a state-of-the-art accreditation system.

How will I study?

You’ll learn through core modules and options. There is also a research module to prepare you for your dissertation.

You’ll be assessed through:
-Term papers
-Coursework assignments
-Presentations
-Practical exercises
-The final dissertation

Some modules have examinations.

Chancellor's International Scholarship (2017)
-25 scholarships of a 50% tuition fee waiver
-Application deadline:1 May 2017

HESPAL Scholarship (Higher Education Scholarships Scheme for the Palestinian Territories) (2017)
-Two full fee waivers in conjuction with maintenance support from the British Council
-Application deadline: 1 January 2017

USA Friends Scholarships (2017)
-A scholarship of an amount equivalent to $10,000 for nationals or residents of the USA on a one year taught Masters degree course.
-Application deadline: 3 April 2017

Careers

Our graduates go on to work as legal and policy advisors on governance and human rights for:
-Government ministries
-UN agencies
-The Refugee Council
-Bilateral and multilateral agencies such as the World Bank.

They work on citizen engagement in NGOs including:
-Afghan Aid
-Global Fund to fight AIDS
-Christian Aid.

They also work in academic research.
