A world leader in research, the School of Geography offers an exciting programme aimed at students who wish to focus primarily on undertaking a research-based masters level qualification. The MSc (by Research) is suitable for students with a science or social science background.
The programme is ideal for students who wish to experience what it is like to do a PhD without the requirement to undertake three years of study.
Students receive close support and guidance from two academic supervisors within the school who are related to their area of research. Supervisors meet regularly with students, making sure that they are fully involved in the school's leading research community.
The MSc (by Research) programme enables students to conduct in-depth research into a science or social science focussed aspect of geography. The creation of a major supervised research thesis forms the basis of the programme, but students may also elect to undertake optional taught modules related to their research.

Although primarily a research degree, the MSc (by Research) offers the option, but not the obligation, to undertake up to 60 credits of masters level taught modules appropriate to the student's research interests.
The main assessment for the degree will consist of a thesis, based on the student's research. The length of the thesis will depend on the number of taught modules taken.
