Explore our world, with a virtual masters programme that offers the GIS tools and techniques for harnessing spatial information to shape planning, transport, retail marketing and more.

From maps and social networks, to transport and our environment, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are central to modern society. With innovative technologies and sophisticated approaches, we can do more than ever to capture, analyse, store and display information about the earth’s surface. This flexible masters offers the chance to harness those technologies and approaches – paving the way to a professional future in GIS.

It’s a part-time, distance-learning course with the flexibility to study wherever and whenever suits you – so it’s a perfect option for working professionals. Over the course of three years, you’ll develop an in-depth understanding of the techniques and issues involved in using GIS to tackle spatial problems, before producing a research dissertation project.

The programme is delivered through UNIGIS UK, a partnership between Manchester Met and Salford University that brings together a wealth of experience and contacts. And, whenever you need advice or support, you’ll have it through our dedicated UNIGIS office.

By the time you finish, you’ll have the skills and knowledge to harness GIS in a professional setting – equipped to pursue roles in a variety of sectors, from urban and regional planning, to retail marketing and transport.

UNIGIS is a Distance Learning Postgraduate Network in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) jointly run by Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Salford. Our highly regarded programme is designed to meet the needs of professionals working in the GI industry - or those wishing to enter the sector. UNIGIS aims to provide a deeper and balanced education in GIS.

As a founding partner of UNIGIS UK, we’ve been at the forefront of GIS education for 25 years – there are few other places that can offer the expertise we do. We work with a global network of universities specialising in GIS to constantly revise and reshape the course, reflecting the latest technology, techniques and research.

We’re also vastly experienced in distance learning. Having offered online masters courses for many years, we’ve had plenty of time to hone and perfect our virtual learning platforms. The result is an engaging and dynamic experience, that offers both flexibility and support. So, while you can study when and where is suits you, you can also get the guidance you need from our experienced, expert tutors. We even offer the chance to discuss the course with your fellow students – so you don’t need to be on campus to be part of a student community.
