Course content

The MSc in General Practice is aimed at providing you with an understanding of managerial, clinical and educational issues that will develop general practice, and with the complementary skills required to contribute to and influence development and evaluation of general practice in the context of the current health and changing agenda.

It seeks to offer a mix of theoretical and practical skills appropriate to an ever-changing primary health care agenda. The emphasis will be upon effective service provision, efficient delivery by practitioners who are able to care for patients and themselves.

Teaching and learning will focus on the development of conceptual understanding and knowledge appropriate to postgraduate level study, the application of understanding to personal and professional practice and experience, and the development of relevant skills to enhance understanding and practice. Teaching and learning methods include formal lectures, experiential work, seminars, student presentations, group discussions and activities, independent individual and group study.

Assessment methods include personal education plans, practice plans, portfolios, negotiated projects, research proposals, essays, analytical assignments and dissertation.

This MSc programme aims to offer maximum flexibility to general practitioners who can only participate in this type of work part-time. It fills a gap locally in higher education and its supportive and flexible approach should make it attractive to practitioners in the north of the region.

This programme believes in the importance of life-long learning and endeavours to provide the practitioner with an educational framework that is both professionally relevant and appropriate for applying theory to live practice. The MSc programme with its available exit awards will be particularly relevant to newly qualified principals within ten years of qualification who wish to undertake Higher Professional Training, or for the more experienced principal with ten years or more post-qualification experience.

The modules enable students to develop, integrate and apply understanding and skills in the personal and professional management, organisation and delivery of general practice in an on-going climate of change, the conduct and use of research, and to develop and use skills in collaborative working, debate, research and presentation.
