Forestry (MSc)

Course Description

UBC Forestry offers a research (thesis) -based Master’s program within a Science (MSc) or an Applied Science (MASc) credential. Thesis Master’s students receive training in research techniques, and also make contributions in their own right to the body of knowledge. The type of work undertaken by an MSc or MASc student tends to be focused, looking at a specific problem, and is generally completed within 2-3 years.

We have approximately 80 thesis-based master’s students in any given year, which is about one-third of our total Forestry graduate student population. In addition to being part of the Faculty of Forestry, MSc and MASc students are also considered members of one of our three Faculty departments, based on their supervisor’s affiliation.

(Student Profile)

Kunqian (Polo) Zhang

3491.jpg Research Description
My research is part of the project which is a new collaboration between the University of Cambridge, MIT, the University of British Columbia and Cambridge Architectural Research. A major focus of the project is to enhance the sustainability of building products through the development of a lower-carbon alternative to conventional structural components. Furthermore, well-designed buildings incorporating structured bamboo product (SBP) will have lower operating energy use, and thus emit lower levels of carbon throughout their life cycles. My research is more focused on reducing the density of bamboo oriented strand boards without compromising its high quality.

Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?
I believe graduate studies will help me get a deeper understanding through specialized research. With undergraduate study, I could find what I was really interested in. I worked for four months as a research assistant with Greg Smith on the Bamboo Project and those four month aroused my big interest in bamboo products. I feel there is a desire for more targeted knowledge, so I knew graduate studies was suitable for me.

Why did you decide to study at UBC?
I had studied wood material science and technology in Beijing Forestry University for 3 years and pursued my bachelor degree there. Studying abroad to gain different advanced technology is one of my dreams. The UBC Faculty of Forestry has a program which provides students like me a chance to broaden our knowledge horizon through transferring here. I think the time I spent here is really a great fortune for me.

What advice do you have for new graduate students?
Language is always the biggest barrier. Keep practicing English before coming to UBC as well as after starting your new life in Canada. I know it is time-consuming and it is hard to conquer those difficulties at first, but it is worth it.
