Course content

This course is an ideal progression if you have completed an undergraduate degree in a relevant area of accountancy, business, economics or finance, and want to pursue a career in finance. The course is highly focused on skills development and helps to provide knowledge of current developments in the finance sector, in an international context. This enables you to develop critical insights through vocationally-relevant subject matter.

We will introduce you to important issues for financial markets; for example, critical evaluation of theories affecting financial management, in corporate organisations and capital markets. You will have the opportunity to develop skills in managing an investment portfolio, and an understanding of mechanisms of corporate governance in supporting financial markets.

Our focus is on using varied teaching and assessment methods to help develop a wide range of academic, analytical, presentation and practical skills in our students. We use a number of teaching methods such as seminars, workshops and student-led discussions, to analyse issues relating to defined topic areas on this course. We also use group projects and presentations to improve your team working and communication skills, alongside case study analysis and advanced level accounting exercises.

Our strong connections with the financial world are demonstrated through our ‘Partners in Accountancy’ scheme, which links you with accountancy firms of national and international repute. You will be taught by staff with extensive experience as practitioners; with knowledge in businesses, the commercial sector (including banking) and the professional bodies. Guest lecturers from the world of business and banking are also used on some modules; recent guests have included HSBC.
