Overview

Our MSc in Finance provides a solid theoretical foundation in finance. The course brings in expertise from the University’s departments of Mathematical Sciences and Economics. This ensures you’ll have access to a wide range of teaching and research experience

You will develop in-depth knowledge of the financial system and learn to analyse financial decisions and the motivations of people making them.

Why study the MSc in Finance?

This course is designed for graduates with little or no business experience who want a career in finance.

You will learn to use your quantitative skills and apply your knowledge in a range of real-world scenarios. You'll graduate prepared for a finance-related career.

Course structure

Our MSc in Finance is a full-time degree that lasts 12 months. It is divided into two semesters and the summer period which runs from June to September. In each semester you will study three compulsory units and select two optional unit from an approved selection.

Semester 1 core units

Econometrics for finance; Theory of financial decision making; Investment management

Semester 2 core units

Corporate finance; International finance; Financial econometrics

Example optional units:

Financial derivatives; Banking; Corporate Governance; Introduction to quantitative finance; Risk management; Financial engineering; New venture financing; behavioural finance

Dissertation or Practice Track

In the final three months of the degree you can choose the dissertation track or practice track.

Dissertation track: 

The dissertation is a 9,000-12,000 word piece of individual research, supervised by a member of faculty. You will plan and execute your own project, using techniques learned throughout the year. 

Practice track: 

The practice track is a team project that allows you to work with one of our partner organisations to solve a real business challenge. You will apply the theory and skills you have learned to a practical issue and present your work to the company.
