Student Profile(s)

Dunila Hettiarachichi

With an undergraduate degree in Science from the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka and a Diploma in Textiles, Dunila Hettiarachichi won a scholarship to study for his masters in Fashion Innovation and Realisation at LJMU.

“My undergraduate degree was in Science but I was working in textile manufacturing so wanted a qualification to back up my experience. The programme at LJMU was ideal and I loved the fact that the modules were all about experience and practical applications relevant to your career, rather than just writing assignments.

Having worked with major brand sportswear manufacturers, my interest lies in performance materials. During my time at LJMU I have developed sports leggings which increase the blood circulation in the lower body and gloves which offer extra grip for sporting applications.

LJMU offers a really warm welcome to international students and, when it came to liaising with another School to test my products, my programme coordinator came with me to the School of Sport and Exercise Science to introduce me to Professor Claire Stewart. Based on my experience at other universities, I really didn’t expect that but I can honestly say that you never feel alone here. Staff really are behind you every step of the way, offering all the guidance you need.

LJMU has given me the experience and exposure I need to take my career to the next level. It is based in a very multicultural and student-friendly city where it is easy to make friends. I am very glad I came to LJMU.”
