UCLan’s MA in Fashion and Lifestyle Promotion course gives the innovative promoter chances to explore personal interests at postgraduate level, underpinned by extensive research, and combined with benefits of debate and peer review. The individual will subsequently be able to view their place within the multifaceted industry of the future.
LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT
The Victoria Building is a modern, bright building with purpose-built studios and workshops, including photographic studios, audio visual and computer imaging facilities. It is close to the library, computer facilities, student union, cafés, bars, refectory, and the centre of Preston is only a five minute walk away. The University's Library has a well-resourced Art and Design section and a specialist librarian. The MA studio provides a range of facilities and work space.
The course is continually assessed through module requirements, allowing students to achieve target awards. Final modules are graded Pass, Merit, Distinction.
Teaching involves a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, presentations and industry liaison, and assessment is continuous. Theory underpinning practice is developed simultaneously throughout each semester and Negotiated Agreements Parts I and II allow students to acquire the ability to develop and refine proposals, which underpin their major projects, and reflect on personal progress. Students are expected to contextualize their work within a current framework, and develop evaluative skills in order to articulate their point of view. Research Methods and Application introduces students to a range of analytical research tools, forming the basis for all in-depth self-directed projects on the programme.
The course aims to develop students’ intellectual and imaginative power through a programme of study that is formed from cohesion between theory and practice. It provides graduates with a stimulating environment in which ideas can be exchanged and supported through factual creative research, developed and contextualised. We challenge our students to take a critical position in relation to existing theories and encourage new connections within the field of fashion that challenge traditional design boundaries.
Opportunities for employment within the Creative Industries include: Brand Manager, Brand Consultant, Trend Analyst, Event Manager, Campaign Manager, Related Fashion Industries and Teaching Profession.
The opportunity for a structured work experience will be provided for every student who requests it. This is a major commitment by the University to help our graduates to reach their potential and thrive in their careers after graduation.
Study trips are an essential part of research activity that brings design to life. Throughout the programme, students are introduced to contemporary influences with international city trips and study visits to exhibitions and museums - Manchester, London, Berlin and New York have been regular trips in recent years (students will be required to pay for overseas trips/visits and these are, therefore, optional).
Applicants are normally required to have completed an undergraduate programme or first degree in a relevant subject (e.g. Fashion and Brand Promotion, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, Fashion Merchandising, Photography, Design), normally at first or upper second classification (or the equivalent of a UK GPA of 60 per cent). All applicants need to prepare a comprehensive study plan proposal which should evidence interest, dedication or experience within the subject of lifestyle and fashion.
