The Environmental Pollution and Remediation programme at Aberdeen covers all you need to know to assess and analyse pollutants in our environment. You learn to understand legislation and policies relating to pollution control as well as recognised environmental risk assessment methods.

Our programme includes a wide variety of courses relevant to pollution and its management. These include environmental pollution, remediation technology, hydrocarbon risk assessment and remediation, environmental analysis and environmental impact assessments (EIA). During these courses you will develop key skills in environmental policy, legislation, risk assessment models and chemical analysis.

Through both lectures and interaction with experts in the field, you will gain a wide appreciation of the environmental impacts of pollutants that have been affecting our environment for many years, such as heavy metals and petroleum by-products, as well as new pollutants, such as micro plastics and nano particles. You will learn how to quantify many of these pollutants, understand their impact and develop strategies for their remediation.

The programme includes a week-long residential course at Ballater, within the Cairngorms National Park, that focuses on ecosystem management in national parks.

Aberdeen's Environmental Pollution and Remediation programme is ideal for anyone looking for a career in environmental consultancy, environmental engineering, the energy sector, as well as regulators. It will also suite to students looking to enhance their research skills with the aim of continuing towards a PhD.

There are no final exams and courses are evaluated through a range of assignments that aim to help students build further valuable skills such as writing reports, designing and writing environmental management plans, giving presentations and analysing and interpreting data. The programme ends with you designing and running a final project that will reinforce the skills and understanding you have developed. You will have the choice of selecting a project from an extensive list of available projects or to plan a project of your own to reflect your individual interests and career goals, in collaboration with your supervisor.
