(Student Profile)

James McQuilken

'The MSc in Environment and Development has provided me with a concrete understanding of the key theories, debates, and discourses of international development past and present. Whilst selecting particular modules has provided me with a detailed working knowledge of relevant issues ranging from food security, governance, and communication to artisanal mining – with a focus on sub-Saharan Africa and taught by academics that are engaging and at the top of their fields. The great variety of student backgrounds has enabled me to understand how theories effect people in reality, make some fantastic friends and contacts, and learn from my peers.

I have developed my time management, presentation, and essay writing skills significantly and enjoyed engaging with the literature critically. These skills and my time at GIIDAE have, in no doubt, prepared me for a career in development – whether it be a working for an NGO, government agency, development consultant, inter alia, or continued study for a PhD.'
