Student Profile

Aimée Louise Carton, MSc in Entrepreneurship Graduate

A year and a half ago, I sat in my kitchen writing an application for the MSc in Entrepreneurship at Trinity Business School. Little did I know that within that time I would meet incredible friends, professionals and thought leaders, I would find my co-founder, start a business and get the opportunity represent Ireland by pitching our start-up, KeepAppy, on a global stage in Silicon Valley in September 2019.

The MSc in Entrepreneurship was so different to either of my previous two degrees, as it emphasised practical learning and a real-world approach to entrepreneurship. For example, instead of learning the theory around setting up a business, we were given one week to do just that during the Business Model Innovation course. From day one, myself and my peers were challenged by successful entrepreneurs and investors who pushed us to be the best that we could be. Additionally, the Trinity community allowed us to work with Enactus Ireland through the TCD Enactus Society, which gave us incredible access to Enactus’ amazing partners, like KPMG, Unilever, Aer Lingus and Bank of Ireland to name but a few.

The class dynamic also made this year all the more special, with such a diverse mix of nationalities and personalities making up a wonderful working environment, where the collaboration and support we gave to one another improved each project and assignment we had to submit. While the year was tough, at every stage we could count on the staff in Trinity Business School for help when we needed it, such as my incredible thesis supervisor, Dr. Sheila Cannon, who has been a pillar of guidance and advice! This help meant that although there were lows, at no point where we ever alone or at a loss for what to do. Additionally, the lows just meant that the highs were even brighter!

Trinity boasts a dynamic and inclusive student community. Nestled in the heart of Dublin’s city centre, it offers a wealth of extracurricular and recreational opportunities. With over 120 student societies and 50 sports clubs, there's something to pique the interests of every student, facilitating the chance to make new connections and develop new skills.

Many people take a narrow view on the word ‘investment’, but for me the MSc Finance has been my best investment to date. Engaging and prominent lecturers do not only match the reputation of the programme, but the knowledge being passed on is consistently allowing students to meet their career ambitions.

Not only have many colleagues complimented the range and depth of the programme’s curriculum, the potential to become involved in extra-curricular activities is superb. For example, the CFA Research Challenge and the Trinity Student-Managed Fund both provide students with invaluable access to industry mentors, and the sort of experience that employers are increasingly looking for.

Having studied Corporate Law prior to the programme, I also benefitted from the flexible admissions policy. Most people find that success on the course depends on each person’s desire to learn rather than necessarily having a particular mathematical or finance orientated background. The mix of students from many different disciplines is testament to this. This way of thinking ensures each student’s contribution is uniquely different, which leads to exciting classroom discussion and coursework. While hard work is certainly required, you are given the tools and resources to succeed.

Trinity was an experience I will never forget. I would highly recommend Trinity Business School to anyone that wants to pursue a Master Degree in Financial Risk Management. The relative small size of the class, coupled with the devotion our lecturers gave us throughout the year was an essential component to the success of my degree.

The course offered the opportunity to work as part of a group as well as develop our own knowledge of the different elements of financial risk one can meet in a corporate environment. Trinity also offered to its students a wide range of sports and societies that helped us create our own network based on similar interests and enjoy even more being part of Trinity's community.

I am now working in one of the World’s top banks in the Financial Risk Management sector, an opportunity I might never have had without studying the MSc Financial Risk Management programme at Trinity Business School.

Ireland being one of the fastest growing economies, gave me immense opportunities to attend the top notch European Tech and Business events. The networking and learning opportunities are tremendous especially as a Trinity student and I would advise to make the most of it. I had a chance to explore my passion in FinTech and Marketing and open my mind to the industry under the guidance of my professors. The faculty is approachable and are veterans in their fields so, I would advise to seek guidance.

I had an experience of a lifetime at Trinity Business School. The business students came from all over the world. Thus, I experienced diversity in terms of culture, language, experience and business etiquettes. Every day at Trinity Business School encouraged me to push myself beyond my limits.

The programme provided me with a practical experience of working on Marketing projects. I had an amazing time during the discussions in the class, solving complex problems during group assignments and researching for individual assignments. The modules in the Marketing programme are a great blend of the traditional and digital marketing areas that has provided me with skills and confidence to succeed in the corporate environment.

I had studied Commerce during my pre-university course (leaving cert) in India and developed a penchant for Accountancy and business studies. As a long term objective, I had always thought of obtaining a professional qualification in accountancy for greater career flexibility. The Post-Graduate Diploma in Accounting (PDA) from Trinity Business School was exactly what I was looking for. The duration of the course is less than one year, its curriculum is approved by several professional accountancy bodies such as ACCA, CIMA etc and hence they offer several exemptions from their exams. The course is alsotaught by Trinity Business School, one of the finest educational institutions in the world, so I felt that everything was falling into place and so I took the plunge.

I chose Trinity College Dublin because it is world-renowned for its quality of education. It has a longstanding history and a rich culture of academic excellence. It has nurtured some of the most highly influential people on a wide array of fields, and it's a brand which is far-flung. All of these were my deciding factors for choosing Trinity College.

I chose Ireland as I wanted to study in a foreign country and experience a foreign culture. Ireland is an English speaking country, located in the EU, and well connected to all the major cities in the world. It attracts students from all over. The Irish are known for their friendliness and hospitality. Trinity College in Ireland offered the course which fit my needs. And as the last piece of the jigsaw Ireland offers trainee accountant visa programme for accounting students to complete professional accounting qualification. So, in essence, Ireland offered everything I had dreamed of.

My experience in Trinity College and in Ireland has been as fulfilling as it has been rewarding. Trinity Post-Graduate Diploma in Accounting students are highly sought after by employers. I received multiple offers to train in professional accounting whilst I was still in college. Since my graduation I have been working in the Financial Accounting & Advisory Services (FAAS) division of a large multinational accounting firm. The modules that I learnt in the programme are very much relevant to my workplace assignments. My employer is sponsoring my ACCA studies and I soon hope to be a qualified accountant. I carry a sense of pride being a Trinity College alumnus and I will always cherish that feeling.

Ask yourself the question: Why do you want to study at this university? I decided to do my Master's degree at Trinity because of the effect Trinity has on people. We want the world, we have the name, and we are willing to work. We constantly ask questions. We challenge the status quo and force ourselves to think critically. We are not studying here because we have to; we are studying here because we want to. My advice for anybody would be to make the most of where you are and why be anywhere else if you could be at Trinity?

Last year September I had the unique privilege to enrol in the M.Sc. HRM programme at Trinity Business School. Trinity Business School is one of the most prestigious and globally recognised business schools in the world. The M.Sc. HRM programme offered me many opportunities to develop my intellectual knowledge on the corporate world.

My overall study experience at Trinity Business School was greatly influenced by how international the school's community is. I had the honour of meeting like-minded intellectual students from different countries who also strive to develop their academic knowledge. I noted that our class was a huge asset during seminars and discussions because of our diverse backgrounds. In addition, the university is seriously focused on helping students get where they want to go after they graduate. The career service is excellent, and if a student is interested in academia, all the professors are willing to help with giving advice on how to start an academic career.

In conclusion, the highlight of the programme for me was to visit and network with international companies like Grant Thornton and Microsoft. Our course offers an opportunity for students to tour esteemed companies and work together in teams on company projects. We also gained first-hand knowledge from leading HR professionals on modern HR trends. The world is resilient. But so are Trinity students.

The time at Trinity College Dublin and within the Digital Marketing Master programme was one of the most important and pathbreaking times in my life looking back on it. Having some work experience before joining the Master program made me a bit unsure if it would be the right choice for me., mainly because I wanted to be able to get back into a role minimum at the same level like before after the programme.

It turned out that I could not have done a better choice with the programme at Trinity! I was not only able to increase my skill set significantly within the area of digital marketing, I was also able to get so much insights into the Dublin tech environment and build up a network within.

Regarding the content of the programme, I can just say how well-designed and thought through it is. The combination of theoretical and academic knowledge combined with powerful, project-orientated hands on work on real life clients make this a unique experience and a chance for everyone who wants to develop into digital marketing. This combination of learned skills enabled me to qualify for one of the best rated and most-known employers in Dublin where I am super happy to work at as a Key Account Manager for Swiss clients today.

Overall, I can just say that this year laid the path for the next step in my career and I benefited a lot from the high quality of teaching and the great choice of lecturers, which I am still closely connected with. I would recommend this programme to everyone who wants to work in digital marketing, be it at the beginning of their career or somewhere in between!
