About the course

Our Department is well-known for its research in English Language. Staff members have produced major descriptions of English grammar and phonetics, as well as studies in areas such as critical discourse analysis, sociolinguistics (including the study of accents and dialects), literary stylistics and English language teaching. Notable staff have included the late Geoffrey Leech, Norman Fairclough and Ruth Wodak (the latter two, though no longer teaching full-time, maintain a presence in the department). Current notables include Jonathan Culpeper, Paul Baker and Elena Semino. We have world-leading expertise and resources in corpus methods, phonetics and cognitive linguistics.
