Course content

The course has been designed to keep disruption to the employee and the workplace to a minimum, with a focus on eight long study weekends each year in the first two years, rather than a regular day release format. In the first year participants take the level 7 certificate in Leadership & Management, a qualification in its own right, worth 20 credits towards the programme. The final year involves a real-world project carried out in the workplace.

Some employers believe that that there is a lack of strategy oriented scientific and technological insight into board-level decisions, reducing the breadth of knowledge that is now required in an increasingly complex and rapidly globalising business environment.

Course Outline & Modules

This programme aims to help emerging engineering leaders to build on their previous specialist skills, experiences and training to acquire those management and leadership skills required to meet their own and their company goals. To this end the programme will be, in part, demand lead, by working with a number of first adopter/trailblazer firms on their specific content needs, in the form of optional modules or modules they may wish to deliver themselves.

-Strategic Management & Finance (EM4032)
-Project Management (EM4033)
-Research Methods (EM4034)
-Developing Leadership & Management Capability through Enquiry (also achieves the ILM level 7 certificate in Leadership & Management) (EM4035)

-Commercial Engagement (EM4036)
-Human Resources Management (EM4037)
-Supply Chain Management (EM4038)
-Operational Effectiveness (EM4039)
-Sustainable Engineering (EM4040)
-CSR and Governance (EM4041)

-Major Employer Project (EM4042)

Learning, Teaching & Assessment

The programme will be delivered using a range of methods including interactive lectures, tutorials, site visits, guest lectures and class debate.

Assessment methods are chosen in relation to the particular requirements of a module. Assessment methods employed include group and individual assignments, and class participation.

Career Opportunities

Are you on the cusp of your engineering/management career, wondering what comes next? Here are a few comments and thoughts from our Alumni about how this programme will help:

"My experience so far has shown that leadership is a rare quality in the industry. I strongly believe that it is a quality that an individual either has it or not, but techniques and best practices could be learned in a University programme. Honestly the programme seems very interesting.”

"Very flexible delivery; sounds like it is tailored to engineers, rather than a generic management programme”

"Additional Leadership experience would give a great addition to my current work experience”

"Sounds like a good way to bridge the gap between engineering and business qualifications."
