Located in the heart of a major energy city this programme provides you with a plentiful supply of links and understanding of the energy industry and regulators in the city whilst ensuring you gain two interconnected areas of environmental law from a top 5 ranked School of Law (The Times Good University Guide 2019).

If you are fascinated by protecting the environment and you want to regulate impacts on behalf of other parties this programme gives you a full appreciation of environmental law applied to energy and environment. The oil and gas industry is heavily regulated to ensure that sensitive areas and receptors are protected as much as possible by the UK and other governments internationally. Across the wider environment there is a balance where environmental protection is often at odds with new economic growth and this can present considerable environmental challenges to all concerned.

We are all now very aware of pollution in our environment and the documented research which is proving its harmful impacts on all living things in sea/water, earth/soil and air. These challenges affect us all at individual and group level. In this programme you understand how to apply legal requirements of regulation and policy to control harmful pollutant effects on all life on this planet and you learn to understand how previous challenges have altered what is acceptable practice in terms of environmental pollution and when to challenge and apply the polluter pays principle.

The programme is ideally situated in the heart of the energy industry to take full advantage of learning and knowledge in Aberdeen city where regulators and energy providers work alongside to ensure that environmental protection is paramount. You benefit from nearby protected locations such as National Parks where there are restrictions on planning and development specifically to protect environment. In every day life you can be assured that there will be a constant demand for your skills as a consultant to work with business, groups and individuals to protect environment with the 'Polluter Pays' principle in terms of protecting basic rights relating to environment. There are many instances where our environment needs protecting in our daily lives from poor planning decisions to insufficient reference to the environment when considering new directions.

At Aberdeen you get a full range of experts in energy law, drawing from historical and close links with the energy industry in the city and environmental law experts covering renewables, corporate environmental responsibility, and regulation. This programme differs from the other University of Aberdeen programme as you deliver a research project in the form of dissertation rather than professional skills. You could decide to work for an energy company or any industry within its environmental regulation and protection area or you could work in an environmental law practice where you can specialist further in specific aspects to environmental law with interest you.
