Course content

The Postgraduate Diploma in Endocrinology from the University of South Wales is designed to be very practical and clinically focused.

This online course aims to help the student to develop creative problem-solving approaches to complex clinical situations and become an important advocate in the delivery of care to people with endocrinology related problems.

Designed to create professionals who can independently access information and use it to critically assess, evaluate and disseminate the evidence base related to endocrine care; it is relevant to all health professionals such as Specialist Registrars, Endocrine Nurses and Primary Care Physicians with a specialist interest in endocrinology who may have exposure to people with endocrine related disorders.

On completion of the diploma, students have:
- a greater confidence and understanding of the management of patients with endocrine disorders through case studies and discussion.
- improved critical analysis of published data and data interpretation.

What you will study

The postgraduate diploma course is based on the Royal College of Physicians Specialty Training The online course lasts one calendar year and is a part time distance learning course, with 6 modules per year, each of 6 weeks duration.
- Module 1 – Disorders of the hypothalamus and pituitary
- Module 2 – Disorders of the thyroid
- Module 3 – Disorders of the adrenals
- Module 4 – Disorders of parathyroids, calcium and bone
- Module 5 – Reproductive endocrinology
- Module 6 – Endocrine-related cancer

Learning and teaching methods

At the outset, there is an optional one day residential programme at the University’s Glyntaff campus which provides an overview of the course and the study skills required.

For the continuing online course, candidates are split into groups of 10-15 students. Each group is supervised by a lecturer who facilitates the group, monitors and assesses each student throughout the module.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

The course has direct relevance to the demands of working roles and will assist in career enhancement and support specialisation. It is envisaged that most students will be in endocrine-related posts or aspiring to such positions.

The course provides appropriate post qualification preparation for roles in endocrine-related specialist teams, specialist nursing, practice nursing and allied health professionals aiming to provide endocrine-related services in primary care. Similarly, pharmaceutical companies are keen to support their representatives in postgraduate education and this qualification will be perceived favourably in career progression and specialisation.
