Course content

Our MA Education: Research-engaged Setting is an innovative programme which offers you the opportunity to explore the links between theory, policy and practice in education. Throughout the course you will develop your knowledge based on a wide range of critical perspectives and will be supported by experienced researchers in examining your particular interest in your own research-engaged setting.

This course engages you and colleagues with current issues and debates in education, enabling you to gain critical awareness and understanding and to develop new insights. You will engage in research and advanced scholarship in the discipline and will develop as a self-directed, independent learner who is able to deal with complex issues both systematically and creatively.

Our MA in Education: Research-engaged Setting includes innovative approaches to teaching, learning and assessment which are supported by a team of tutors who are also active researchers. We have designed the programme to enable you to study with others in your settings who are interested in a wide range of educational issues. Settings could include, for example, primary, secondary, post-compulsory or higher education; libraries and archive professionals; people working in museum education; individuals with mentoring roles; and Early Years teachers, play workers or Children’s Centres.

Course structure

This flexible course enables you to apply your experience in research-engaged settings by selecting areas of focus for assignments to support your professional practice and academic interests. In the final stage of the course you will undertake a dissertation where you will to research in depth one particular theme of your choice.

Given the context-specific nature of this particular MA course, it may be possible for certain aspects of the programme material to be embedded within your own setting. Previously staff and students have worked collaboratively to develop a bespoke approach to delivery that enables quality research within your own practice setting.

Our MA course in Education: Research-engaged Setting can be studied full-time (typically over three academic semesters) or part-time (typically 3 years). The full-time option may be more suitable if you are taking a break from employment or following on from undergraduate study.
