Programme description

The MSc Education is our flagship taught postgraduate degree and one of our most popular programmes. It provides an ideal foundation for students who wish to work in education policy, research or practice or for those who want to go on to doctoral level study.

We are currently taking applications for a general MSc Education and now, new for 2017/2018, applicants have the opportunity to choose a pathway in a particular area of education where we have research and teaching strengths. The pathways on offer are a new and exciting innovation to the programme.

Through strategically designed compulsory courses and a wide range of options, this programme allows you to focus your studies on particular areas of interest and relevance to your educational and professional aims. With guidance from our staff and in a lively and supportive student community, you will take part in social and philosophical reflection about the nature, value and purposes of education.

Programme structure

You will learn through a combination of lectures, student-led seminars/presentations and, where appropriate, practical skills training and project work. You will complete 4 compulsory courses and depending on the pathway you choose, you’ll choose from a range of option courses.

Compulsory courses;

  • Education Policy and the Politics of Education
  • The Philosophy of Education
  • Sources of knowledge
  • Conceptualising research.

Pathways

Students enrolling on the MSc Education programme will, from 2017/2018 academic session onwards, be able to either gain a general MSc degree in Education or else take a specific pathway. The pathways are based upon research and teaching strengths in the school:

Past students have undertaken further study and doctoral research, while others have applied their knowledge and skills to a variety of education-related fields, from school teaching, educational policy and administration, to recruitment, charity-related educational research and political advisory roles.
