Course content

The MA Education provides an excellent opportunity to develop your career. Employers are looking for flexible thinkers with the ability to underpin change with theory, and previous participants on the course have told us that the MA Education has developed these skills. The course can be completed in one year studying full-time, or two years studying part-time. You can choose to start the course in either October or January.

Our MA Education programme will:

  • build upon your existing skills, experience and/or qualifications using our APL processes;
  • allow you to customise your experience of the programme through flexible assessment approaches;
  • develop your skills, knowledge and understandings and apply what you learn to your current or future role, responsibilities or career aspirations;
  • provide a high quality learning experience in a collaborative and supportive environment.

What happens on the course?

You will engage with critical analysis and rigorously investigate issues relating to learners and the work of educational organisations. We always value applying education theory to professional practice to ensure that improvement is informed by critical reflection on a range and breadth of understandings. In a fast moving world of policy changes and challenges to our principles and values, these skills are vital.

Most modules are delivered on campus and with some online sessions. Lectures are mostly in the evenings. One module is delivered totally online to offer greater flexibility. We welcome you if you are involved in any areas of education or you wish to progress straight from a first degree.

  • Our previous graduates have said that the course gave them confidence to apply for positions they would not normally have considered, and that their professional performance has improved as a consequence.
  • Some of our graduates have gone on to become advanced skills teachers, nursery managers, assistant head teachers, disability coordinators and national trainers for charitable organisations.

We have strong partnerships with regional and national education organisations.

Career path

Postgraduate study has enjoyed massive growth in the past 10 years - postgraduate student numbers nationally have grown by 36 per cent, with nearly a quarter of students in UK universities studying at postgraduate level. Clearly professionals believe a post graduate qualification is valuable to their personal and professional lives.

The MA Education is a well recognized award providing an excellent opportunity to develop your career. Employers are looking for flexible thinkers with the ability to underpin change with theory and previous participants on the course have told us that the MA in Education has developed these skills.

They have also told us that the MA has been a vital part of their career development, allowing them to discuss key educational issues and take action with much more clarity and expertise.
