Course content

MA Education is a flexible programme for those who want to extend their knowledge and understanding of current educational practices, contemporary matters of debate in the educational world and key issues related to educational practice.

The emphasis throughout the MA programme is to develop your independent critical thinking and problem solving. Using an inquiry-based approach, the programme is designed to give you scope to examine in detail topics that are of particular interest to you.

MA Education can be studied one year full-time, or up to five years part-time. It helps teachers to develop the educational understanding, analytical skills and leadership qualities necessary to improve pupil development and achievement in schools.

This programme provides you with the opportunity to learn more about curriculum, school management and leadership, as well as information technology and research methods.

MA Education is also appropriate for international students who would like to broaden their knowledge and understanding of different aspects of educational theory and practice.

We designed this programme to aid the professional development of experienced teachers within the context and atmosphere of the latest research in education. A wide range of specialist module subjects enables you to tailor the programme to your own specific needs.

Study information

You study three core modules:

  • Contemporary and Critical Perspectives in Education
  • Research Methodologies in Education
  • International and Intercultural Education

And a further module of your choice from:

  • Leadership

You complete a 60 credit dissertation which allows you to identify and examine a topic of interest to you.

You have the option of leaving the programme at the end of stage 1 with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education or at the end of stage 2 with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education as long as you have earned sufficient credits.

Some modules are supported by visiting speakers and local school and education-related visits.

* All modules are subject to availability.
