Course content

Master of Science Program in Economics is an one-year full-time program aims to provide solid economics and analytical training for students in order to prepare them for further pursuit of higher academic degrees or industry jobs.

About the Program
The MSc in Economics Program aims to provide solid economics and analytical training for students in order to prepare them for further pursuit of higher academic degrees in economics, finance, marketing, management, etc. With the solid training and strong support of the faculty of the economics department of HKUST, graduates of the program are expected to be successful in applying for admissions to Ph.D. programs in relevant fields in North America, Europe, and other parts of the world.

Our graduates will:
-Have deep understanding on economic issues based on knowledge on economics including microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics.
-Be equipped with optimization methods and economic insights to construct theoretical models analyzing economic and business problems.
-Have econometrics skills and knowledge to conduct empirical analysis which can help government or firms making decisions.
-Be able to effectively communicate economic intuition or predictions from empirical analysis to people in academia and in private sectors.

The minimum number of credits needed to fulfill the degree requirements is 30, including 15 credits of core courses and minimum 15 credits of elective courses. The total credit load should not exceed 34.

Core Courses (15 credits)
-Mathematics for Business and Economics
-Microeconomic Analysis
-Macroeconomic Analysis
-Applied Econometrics

Unless exemption has been granted by course instructors, students must take the above four core courses. Students can register in any postgraduate courses offered by the Department of Economics, except ECON5030, ECON5110 and ECON5200.

Electives Courses (15 credits)
Electives and special topic courses include (availability varies from year to year):
-Banking and International Finance
-Behavioural and Experimental Economics
-China Economic Analysis
-Competitive Strategy
-Economics of High-Tech Industries
-Industrial Organization and Regulations
-Information and Incentives
-Strategy and Organization
-Topics in Economic Analysis of Institutions

Subject to the approval of the MSc Academic Director, students may take up to 2 economics related postgraduate courses (of no more than 6 credits) offered by other departments in the School of Business and Management, the School of Science, or the Division of Social Science.

Students may take up to 8 credits of economics related undergraduate courses at 4000-level. Of the 8 credits, no more than 6 credits may be from the Department of Economics.

The majority of graduates had been successful in securing employment upon their graduation as in the past years. Employers include commercial banks and the Big-four accounting firms. Whilst most students decide to stay within the region, in Hong Kong or Shenzhen, some headed off to explore other parts of the world, for instance, Beijing and Shanghai.

Other MSc graduates, who are dedicated to pursue their doctoral degree, have also been accepted by PhD programs. Some of them have received multiple offers to continue their study in renowned universities in North America. Fellowships and scholarships are often provided as well.
