Digital Communication Systems (MSc)

Course Description

Modern information systems continue to transform and progress the ease with which information can be accessed across the globe and to underpin the digital society and economy.

They depend fundamentally on digital systems of communication, and this programme provides thorough coverage of the speciality to meet the high and increasing demand for digital communications engineers who can manage and develop the technologies of today’s data-driven lifestyle.

This programme is aimed at recent engineering, physics and computer science graduates and/or those with a number of years industry experience in the communications industry, who wish to acquire in-depth knowledge of this key specialism in order to progress their careers.

Core study areas include fundamentals of digital signal processing and information theory and coding, and a research project.

Optional study areas include communication networks, personal radio communications, communication channels, digital signal processing for software defined radio, multimedia over networks, mobile network technologies and intelligent signal processing.

How you will learn

The course is designed to give both deep understanding of the core technologies which underpin the industry and which are driving the latest advances in performance and capability. It allows you to develop your personal interests via a range of specialised optional modules. The individual research project is often undertaken as part of the School’s internationally respected research portfolio.

- Assessment
Examinations are held in January and May, with coursework and group work throughout the programme. The individual research project is assessed by written report and viva voce in September.


Students on the programme have access to laboratories, industry standard software and hardware including equipment provided by Texas Instruments. There is a range of anechoic chambers including the largest microwave chamber at any UK university.

Job opportunities include both senior technical and managerial activities in the fields of communications engineering including high speed digital design, communication systems engineering, software/firmware engineering, algorithm development and signal processing engineering.

Pengming Feng

I'm from China and came here last year to study for my masters degree in Digital Communication Systems. Now I'm a PhD student in the Advanced Signal Processing research group.

As an undergraduate student in China, my major was automatic engineering, an area highly related to chemical engineering, but when I applied to do my masters degree in the UK, I wanted to expand my skills and follow my interest in electronic engineering, so I chose the programme of Digital Communication Systems at Loughborough.

I was very lucky to receive a scholarship worth £2000 from the School last year and by the end of the programme I had enjoyed a very interesting and challenging year. I was lucky again because I won the best MSc DCS project prize and graduated with distinction.

I should say it was not only my achievement: I had wonderful help from all the staff in the university and especially my supervisor, Professor Jonathon Chambers, who really helped me a lot during the project teaching me not only the knowledge but also research methods. He inspired me to apply to do a research degree in the group which he leads.

I am now developing my MSc individual project into a full thesis, investigating the joint processing of audio and video signals in the context of machine learning for signal processing. I am applying this to the practical purpose of remote fall detection for vulnerable individuals.

I think Loughborough University is a good place for both studying and living, since it is located in a beautiful small town. At the end of a day studying, I can do some sports to relax since the facilities here are really excellent. The university provides very good study and experimental facilities and all the staff in the university are friendly. If I have a problem, they are always glad to help me to solve it. So in one word, it is great to study here.

Miao Yu

“I love the UK academic way! Here the supervisors and teachers encourage you to discuss and debate things. Of course, when I first came, my English was not very good and I felt a bit shy about talking in classes. But now I love having the chance to discuss both what we are learning about and also my ideas with academics and fellow students who are really interested in the same things as me. This way we all learn together."

Miao Yu came to Loughborough from Shandong Province in 2007 with a first degree in Electronic and Information Engineering, keen to experience first hand the UK education he had heard so much about. He successfully applied to do Digital Communication Systems and soon adapted to English education ways to become an outstanding student, scooping both the Best Student Award and the Best Project Award in his year group.
“I want to thank my supervisor - he inspired me and the experience of doing my individual project taught me so much about how to approach research; so much, that I wanted to stay and do more!”

Miao’s MSc project was related to multi-modal blind-source separation. This is a technique for distinguishing between different types of audio signal when they are mixed together and separating them, for example picking out different voices at a meeting in a noisy environment where several people are speaking at the same time. (We have all been to meetings like that!)

The School was so impressed with his work that Miao was awarded a scholarship to stay and join the Advanced Signal Processing Group where his research contributed to the fields of pattern recognition and image processing. Miao was awarded his doctorate in 2013.


Loughborough University Graduate School Development Trust Africa Scholarships: Full-fee Scholarships - 4 Awards

For 2014 entry the scholarship application procedure is an open competition. Students may only apply for the scholarship after an offer for a place has been made. Students who are in possession of an offer (conditional or unconditional) of a place on a postgraduate taught course can apply for the scholarship using the application form which can be downloaded below.The deadline for applications is 30th April 2014.Applications will be initially shortlisted and the final decision on the awards will be made by a selection panel of senior staff of the University. The selection panel will use the following eligibility criteria when assessing applications:Currently domiciled (permanently living) in Africa
