Course content

This Pre-Masters programme is aimed at postgraduate students who need a year to develop or consolidate their language skills in academic English and to undertake preliminary study in the area of design they would like to study at MA level- http://www.gold.ac.uk/pg/diploma-design/

You'll also have the opportunity to familiarise themselves both with ways of working in British academic culture and in the standards required at Masters degree level.

You can take it as a self-standing Diploma or as an ideal preparation for further postgraduate study. The Graduate Diploma in Design develops critical thinking, technical, practical, theoretical and creative skills relating to the study of Design.

Students who successfully complete the programme at the required level are guaranteed a place on a relevant MA programme in the Department of Design, as well as some of the other Masters degree programmes at Goldsmiths. Students who wish to go on to study elsewhere in the UK will be given help and support in finding an appropriate programme.

See the website http://www.gold.ac.uk/pg/diploma-design/

Modules & Structure

Half of the programme is made up of English for Academic Purposes modules, concentrating on different areas of language development: academic writing and grammar development and The Enlightenment, its legacy and its discontents.

The other half of the programme is taught in the Department of Design. The module options in Design are intended to map on to the pathways within the MA programmes in Design.

Students will have the opportunity to tailor and align their second and third design modules to a particular Masters programme.

You'll have a personal tutor and will receive support in researching and considering various MA degree options for your future studies. You're encouraged throughout the programme to work independently and in particular to use the resources available in the Goldsmiths Library.

Continuous assessment includes regular seminar presentations and researched essays. There will also be written, listening and oral examinations. The Design modules will be assessed by portfolio, essays, and an oral presentation.

Department: Design

We’ve also been ranked by LinkedIn as one of the top graduate universities for designers, because so many of our graduates go on to find jobs in the industry.

- Critique the status quo
We want you to go on to have your own self-sustaining practice that can change over time, so you’ll learn about design not just as a commercial enterprise, but also as a way to question and critique the status quo.

- The freedom to experiment
You don’t have to know what kind of a designer you’ll be: we give you the time and the freedom to experiment, use tools, explore materials and discover different modes of making. Many of our students have already worked in the design industry and are keen to develop their theoretical understanding of the discipline, and have the opportunity to explore their practice without the confines of commercial restrictions.

- Industry leaders
Our graduates are industry leaders: many have gone on to work at top organisations and design companies such as Pentagram, Dyson and Selfridges, while many others have set up their own studios and enterprises.

Skills & Careers

This programme will develop your skills in:
- Critical reasoning
