The MSc Dance Science is taught by some of the leading researchers in this field and is designed for graduates or those individuals with recent, relevant professional dance experience who wish to extend their understanding and use of dance science within a range of challenging and exciting professional and academic settings.
You will undertake a range of taught modules and independent study which will focus on you developing an in-depth understanding of the symbiotic relationship between science and art within dance.
The University of Wolverhampton is the only UK institution that offers separate modules in applied physiology, biomechanics and psychology at this level. You will be supported by a supervisor throughout your studies to develop your knowledge and research skills allowing you to apply this information to vocational opportunities in dance.
You will develop advanced research skills including problem-solving, reflective practice and the ability to critically interpret and apply evidence, developing you as a reflective, evidence-based practitioner and researcher.
You will study a variety of modules which can help you develop skills unique to your situation. You will study Strength and Conditioning (applied physiology), Performance Psychology, Biomechanics and Research Methods before undertaking independent research in the form of Professional Practice (Dance Science support) and Dissertations.
Each taught module on the course is one-week intensive and delivered during August (3 modules) and January (2 modules), which means you can plan your study effectively around your job, children and regular commitments.

Our state-of-the-art performing arts and learning centre; The Performance Hub, opened in 2011 and is the home for all of our performance courses. The state-of–the-art facilities in the hub will give you experience of excellent dance studios and theatre/performance spaces, mac computer suites, professional level recording studios and lighting equipment. It boasts two bespoke dance studios, with sprung floors, mirrored wall and equipment for sound and lighting requirements.
The health of the dancer and their ability to perform optimally has been recognized as fundamental requirements for students and professionals.
This course will provide you will the necessary knowledge and skill-sets to have a direct influence on these dancers within your role as an educator, dancer, choreographer, teacher or artistic director.
There is also the opportunity for existing practitioners to significantly improve their Continuing Professional Development portfolio, or to provide the perfect platform for dance science research, and the opportunity for further study at doctoral level.
At the end of this course you, the student, will be able to:
1. Demonstrate advanced research skills underpinned by a critical appreciation of various research paradigms, methodologies and techniques
2. Critically apply various research skills to complex problem-solving tasks within relevant applied settings
3. Critically apply exercise science theory to dance training and performance
4. Develop case study interventions to improve performance
5. Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the field of dance, and a critical awareness of current problems and/or new insights at the forefront of their academic discipline
6. Demonstrate self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems, and act autonomously in planning and implementing tasks at a professional or equivalent level
