Criminology and International Justice

Course Description

The Masters in Criminology and International Justice was created with the objective of enabling you to specialise your study path and orientate your career towards criminology with an international focus. The Masters in Criminology and International Justice builds on the success of our existing criminology (Masters) courses, providing you with the same excellent foundation in criminological and criminal justice theory, but adds the unique opportunity of studying the subject on an international level.

This Masters will provide a strong foundation in criminological and international justice theory whilst conducting specialist research on your chosen subject. You will develop a profound understanding of contemporary criminological theory in its worldwide context. In addition, the course is designed to help you cultivate highly marketable skills in general research and analysis alongside the subject-specific advanced theoretical work. Not only will you master the theoretical and practical limitations of Criminology and International Justice, you will also develop sharper critical thinking and problem solving skills as you work through a fascinating and revealing collection of genuine cases. The course will be of particular interest to you if you wish to operate on an international stage and gain a qualification much sought after by INGOs and other international agencies which work in this fascinating area.

Departmental staff will also equip you with the skills you need to rise to the challenge of your final dissertation in the third semester. The dissertation will allow you to specialize in an area of interest which could help define the direction of your future research or employment. Previous Masters students at Aberystwyth have found this opportunity to direct their studies to be invaluable in establishing their successful careers within criminal justice agencies or similar third or private sector agencies.

In addition to the direct benefits of studying the latest theories and developments in Criminology and International Justice, you will develop a range of general transferable skills needed for further research and future employment. For example, this course will equip you to identify assumptions, evaluate evidence, detect false logic and reasoning and identify suggestive trends in data. These skills, which are critical to criminological work, are also highly desirable in a broad range of employment contexts – as vindicated by the success of our alumni students.
