Student Profiles

Matthias Grimmer

I studied Computer Science at JKU because I like the place and because the Computer Science master at JKU has an excellent reputation. During my studies I specialized on Software Engineering and in particular on Compilers. I particularly liked the good support from the lecturers as well as the possibility for students to participate in research projects. This was an excellent preparation for my current job.

Currently I am a PhD student and a teaching assistant at JKU. I work on a research project with Oracle Labs Austria in which we develop new techniques for self-optimizing language interpreters with dynamic compilation. I also teach labs in software development and compiler technology.

Studying at JKU was like spending a few years of my life with a big family -- with very supportive Professors and a friendly atmosphere. I focused on software engineering from the very beginning and this was a wise decision-- then in the end, it is software engineering that integrated all other software disciplines.

I am now a senior research scientist at Siemens Corporate Technology, located in Vienna, Austria. My research focuses on configuration technologies, particularly their application in large industrial plants. I am also actively involved in several large-scale projects, where I keenly advocate model-driven software engineering approaches. Currently, I am working on projects in the area of smart cities, especially with the focus on how ICT can support citizens, businesses and city administrators in the cities of the future.

When I came to Austria, I looked for a good university to make a master program in the computer science. I heard about JKU with its excellent reputation and I decided to admit to the master study Software Engineering. I can say, it was one of the best decisions in my life. The campus, the art of the teaching, professors that are always ready to help and explain everything you ask as well as many other things make this university really fabulous. The learning process I could characterize in two words "practice driven". Most of the institutes cooperate with large scale companies and introduce their experience in lectures. The material is, therefore, always relevant and up-to-date. The Software Engineering, as the discipline focusing on scientific methods of development and management of large software projects in all phases gave me excellent foundation and skills for my career.

Now I am a software development engineer and participate in national software projects for social insurance companies. I am involved in all phases of the development process up to operation and I am happy to be able to apply principles and approaches learned within the study like agile methods, requirement analysis, continuous integration, automatic testing and many others to make the top quality software and build the top quality processes.

I always wanted to study Computer Science. The only challenge was to find the right place. Initially, I enrolled at some other university, but I did not like it there so much. After having attended a few courses at JKU, I decided to continue my studies in Linz. I never regretted this decision! The professors there are true experts in their fields and have a genuine interest in encouraging students. The Master's program at JKU allows me to acquire multidisciplinary competencies in Computer Science.

I graduated in February 2015 with specialization in Software Engineering. Currently I am working on my PhD thesis, with focus on developing precise and light-weight memory monitoring tools. In this project we cooperate with an international company, which allows me to apply academic research to real-world problems.

I had my first international experience at Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz, Austria and it was remarkable. The professors at JKU are renowned in their various fields. Most importantly, they are always ready and willing to help. The practical experience that I gained has stirred me on my career path. “The future belongs to those who prepare for it today”- Malcolm X. JKU did prepare me for the future!

I completed my Masters study in Computer Science at JKU in October 2015 and currently I hold a PhD / Graduate Teaching Assistant position at the University of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada with a focus on Natural Language Processing (NLP).
