Course Description

Duration: 1 Year for the Specialist Practice Teacher Award and PGCert / NMC Recorded Teacher Status. 2 years for the PGDip. Up to 5 years can be taken to complete the MA (Part-time).

Non-standard entry requirements:
Applicants are welcomed from those who may not have completed a first degree but who have sufficient professional experience and a record of continuous professional development (CPPD) that would make them suitable to study at this level.

Course description

This programme is designed to offer a flexible Practice Education pathway for those involved in supporting health and social care learners both in practice and academic settings. It is possible to 'step off' or pause after the Practice teacher Award (40 credits), or the PGCert Practice Education(60 credits), and also after the award of PGDip in Practice Education (120 credits). The Practice Teacher Award and PGCert are recognised by the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and lead to recognition as Associate Fellow or Fellow of the HEA.

Career opportunities

The programme incorporates the elements required by Nurses and Midwives who wish to become Community or Specialist Practice Teachers or Nurse/Midwife Teachers recorded with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). The programme also meets the needs of those Allied Health Professionals who wish to be recognised by their professional bodies.

Typical background of applicant

Typically applicants will be graduates in a health and social care field, a registered health or social care professional e.g. nurses, midwives, social workers, general practitioners (GPs), physiotherapists, occupational therapists and will be in a post that involves a high proportion of practice education activities.

Applicants undertaking the full MA Practice Education Dissertation will also be provided with additional group tutorials throughout the length of the dissertation unit. These will be supported by Dr Louise Terry .
