Course content

This course is ideal for those who want to specialise in the commercial field and aspire to senior positions in business. It is designed to help you gain a thorough grounding in Commercial Law, enabling you to choose more specialised option modules in commercial subjects.

The course includes modules on Private International Law, Commercial Law and Legal Research Methods. There are also several optional modules, such as Employment Law, Global Intellectual Property Rights and the Law and Practice of International Trade.

You will receive a structured induction programme preparing you for the demands of the course. Methods of teaching, learning and assessment are designed to enable you to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies required by the course. This reflects both the varying nature of the material studied and your different learning styles and strengths. You will be required to complete a dissertation on a subject of your course (subject to expertise within the law school) and are assigned a dissertation supervisor.

Graduates from the course have gone on to hold senior advisory positions in multinational companies; advising on matters that range from the patenting of computer software, to establishing solid corporate governance procedures within their organisation. Examples of dissertations submitted by students in this area include, ‘Trade mark protection in the use of AdWords’, ‘A critical analysis of the legal framework for international commercial transactions’, as well as ‘Research on arbitration as a method of settling international commercial disputes’.

The course also provides an ideal foundation for those intending to pursue a PhD.
